I want you to keep a thought in the back of your mind for just a moment (you’ll see the connection in a minute).
Using self care strategies in your life is like using an oxygen mask first in an airplane during an emergency before you help someone else.
Think for a moment about all the things fall under the umbrella of ‘mom’. As super, amazing, productive, women who serve their families, we accomplish an incredible number of tasks each and every day.
Unfortunately, our lives often quickly become overwhelmed with being all the things to everyone. You see, we moms are notorious for not refilling our own tanks.
You have probably heard about self-care, including the fact that it helps you to take better care of yourself and focus on what your own needs are. Then that, in turn, helps you to be a better mom and wife and friend and woman.
Another way to practice self-care….
In that way, having effective self-care strategies is like using the oxygen mask first before helping someone else in an airplane emergency. In order to take care of others, you have to first take care of yourself.
However, because moms are typically so bad about taking time for themselves (because, seriously, let’s face it – we work nonstop all day long doing all the things that need to be done), it’s crucial to develop effective self-care strategies.
If you find that you are falling behind on self-care lately, here are some tips to help you get back on track and really focus on your own health and wellbeing.
Self-care is all about doing more things for yourself and making sure to plan for time to recharge. This is when you do activities, whether hobbies or relaxation activities, all for you.
If you are new to using self-care strategies, here are some great ways to start:
Taking a hot bubble bath
When the weather gets cooler, bath season officially begins! Get into a bath with essential oils or aromatherapy bubble bath, or even Epsom salts. Listen to some favorite music, and really indulge in the relaxation.
Using a journal or planner
Another great self-care strategy can also be about becoming more organized and putting all your thoughts on paper. Get into a daily routine of using your planner and/or journal to do brain dumps. This will let your brain relax so you aren’t constantly trying to remember everything.
Trying a creative activity
There are many creative activities that allow you a few minutes of quiet time each day where you can just focus on your skills. This might be writing (in a journal or otherwise), painting, knitting, crocheting, drawing, coloring, playing music, and so much more.
It is also a great time to try learning a new hobby!
Spending time outdoors
Don’t forget that self-care is not always being indoors and indulging yourself in quiet time. You might also want to add self-care strategies that involve going outside. You could go for a walk, sit at a nearby lake or beach, hike in the woods, or even sit in your backyard with a pond or water feature.
We have a pond in the backyard where we just moved in. I find it so relaxing to sit outside and listen to the water tumbling through the feature. It sometimes feels like all my stresses just flow from me into the water.
Meditating or practicing mindfulness can also be great for your mind and body. It helps you relax and clear your mind, so that allows you to feel calm, collected and centered.
Make Time to Play and Have Fun
While relaxation is hugely important to your effective self-care strategies, playtime is just as important. I’m just gonna say something that might blow your mind…playtime is not only for kids!
Make time (even if you are just squeezing it in each day) to have some fun every day!
Our family will have family game nights. Those are always fun nights!
But I find that I sometimes need to just play something simple and easy (no serious thought required) by myself. I recharge most by myself, so having something I can play on my own is just what I need sometimes.
And as a mom, I often need to squeeze it in at random times – such as the waiting room for whatever appointment we are waiting for!
When I found Jigsaw Puzzle, I knew I had what I needed! Puzzles have always been super relaxing (and fun) for me to do. It doesn’t take a lot of hard work – just patience and the willingness to try pieces in different spots.
I can listen to music while I do puzzles which adds to my enjoyment even more!
Unfortunately, the thing about puzzles that makes it difficult for me to do them on a normal basis is to set them up in my home. With kids and pets and never enough space, it just often feels daunting to go through the process.
But the Jigsaw Puzzle app solves that for me! I can play anywhere as long as I have my phone.
And I love that I can take any image in the app and change the difficulty level! I can change the number of pieces for the image from 4 up to 400 (or 1024 pieces on your tablet). And I can also add in the piece rotation option to add even more difficulty.
With daily puzzles, the app keeps things interesting and enjoyable. And these puzzles are incredible: intricate, detailed, colorful puzzle packs like mosaics, quilting patterns, or images of bustling European villages.
The adorable animals are my favorite ones to do. 🙂 I can also use the search feature to find even more puzzle varieties.
A fun activity that I can adapt to fit my needs and wants that day…yes, please! Look how gorgeous it is!
