When my kids started eating rice cereal as babies, we knew we wanted to start feeding them oatmeal every morning as soon as possible. (My mom always told me oatmeal ‘sticks to your ribs’ all morning long.) Around the 9-12 month mark, we started blending up the oats and feeding them oatmeal for breakfast every day. They loved it! As they got older, we stopped blending the oats and they still eat it every morning.
You can substitute almost any other grain for the oats, or do a mixture of grains. Millet, brown rice, etc. Our favorite are the organic whole rolled oats from the Whole Foods bulk section.
We use part of a Plum organics fruit pouch to add flavor and more nutrition. Alternatively, you can steam and puree any fruit, store it in the refrigerator and add it to the oatmeal when it’s done. I also like putting frozen blueberries and walnuts or pecans in the oats as the kids get older.
- 1 1/4 cup milk (or water or other liquid such as almond milk)
- 1 rounded cup oatmeal (Whole Foods, organic whole rolled oats in bulk section)
- 1/2 pouch Fruit pouch or pureed steamed fruit ( Plum Organics Baby Second Blends, Peach, Apricot and Banana)
- 1 pinch iodized salt
- 1-2 tablespoons honey
Measure 1 1/4 cup milk and put in pot.
Bring liquid to a soft boil, reduce heat and add oats and salt. Stir with spatula.
Cook on medium approximately 8-10 minutes, stirring constantly. Oats should stay at an almost boil, make sure you monitor and stir. When oats thicken, they're done.
Remove from heat and stir, add refrigerated pureed fruit and 1/4 cup cold milk, stir. (We use refrigerated 1/2 pouch per batch for our toddlers.) The cold pureed fruit and the cold milk helps cool down the oatmeal. Add honey to top. Serve!
For Baby oatmeal: Blend oats in blender to get them smaller. Our blender was unable to blend so few oats, so we blended 1-2 cups at a time and stored the extra in the fridge. (I used a wide-mouth mason jar with lid to store.) Scale down the amount of oats to almost a 1:1 ratio and cook as instructed below. Add desired amount of pureed fruit when oats are cooked. You can store leftovers and reheat the next day for breakfast. If too thick, add milk to cool and thin.
