The Argument For Making Your Own
Here’s the thing…I know how busy moms are. I also know the desire to give your kids delicious food and sweet treats but the struggle to find the time to make them all is real.
So many moms turn to buying pre-made items to save time.
I get it – no judgement here. ❤️️
In my own personal struggle, I’ve discovered that there are things that are worth buying and things worth spending time to make.
For me, it comes down to the number and types of ingredients in the pre-made versions and the amount of time it takes to make them – and since these homemade pop tarts take mere minutes to make, they’re definitely worth making!
Commercial Pop Tarts have multiple types of added sugar, additives and preservatives that I’m not a fan of.
If you’re like me and want simple foods that don’t take a lot of time, you’ll be happy to know that these air fryer pop tarts use simple ingredients.
Don’t they look amazing?

How to Make Air Fryer Pop Tarts
Follow these directions to make your own mouthwatering pop tarts!
Step 1
Lay your pie crust out flat on a lightly floured surface. With your cookie cutter, cut out as many heart-shaped hearts as you can with the amount of pie crust you have.
Step 2
On one of the heart-shaped crust, take 1 tablespoon of your jelly preserves, and place it in the middle. Spread it out evenly on the heart shape. Make sure to leave room around the edges.
Step 3
Taking your finger, dip it in the egg wash, and evenly spread the egg wash around the edges surrounding the jelly.
Step 4
Place another heart-shaped pie crust on top of the other heart with the jelly on it. Using a fork, press down the edges, creating a seal.
Step 5
Using a kitchen brush, dip it in the egg wash and top the rest of your heart shape with the egg wash.
Step 6
Using a fork, or toothpick, poke about 6 to 8 holes in the top of your top layer of pastry.

Here are some common questions about making homemade strawberry pop tarts in the air fryer and their answers.
Can You Make Homemade Pop Tarts in the Oven?
I haven’t done this myself, but based on a similar recipe I make in the oven, I’d recommend baking them at 400 degrees F for 10-20 minutes. Or until the crusts are golden brown!
How Do You Store Homemade Strawberry Pop Tarts?
Keep them fresh by storing them in an airtight container in the fridge.
How Long Do Homemade Pop Tarts Last?
These air fryer pop tarts will last in the fridge for about a week, although they won’t last that long!
Can I Freeze These Air Fryer Pop Tarts?
If you want to freeze them, pop tightly sealed leftover pop tarts in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Then, when you want them, reheat them in the air fryer for 6-8 minutes on 370 degrees or until warm.
What is Pop Tart Crust Made of?
This recipe uses pre-made refrigerated pie crusts as the crust.
Homemade Strawberry Pop Tarts Variation Ideas
For this recipe, I used strawberry jam because it just seemed to fit (and we love strawberries).
If you want to add some variation to this homemade pop tart recipe, try:
- different flavors of jam – raspberry, blackberry, peach, blueberry, grape, etc.
- different shapes – circles, squares or rectangles, etc.
No matter how you choose to change it, the directions stay the same!
Tips
When using an air fryer, it’s important not to have food items touching each other, as the air needs to be able to circulate.
If you can’t fit everything into your air fryer in a way that they won’t touch each other, simply air fry the pastries in batches instead!
