Common DIY Home Projects That Spiral Out Of Control
What starts as a “simple weekend project” can quickly turn into weeks of dust, unexpected expenses, and late-night trips to the hardware store. From bathroom remodels and flooring installations to tearing down walls, some DIY home projects are far more complicated than they first appear—especially for busy families juggling kids, schedules, and everyday life.

Social media is such a liar. And I know you know that, but I’m not talking about people pretending to be rich or editing their looks. I’m talking about DIY home projects. If you go on Instagram or TikTok, you can find a bathroom vanity being completely transformed in a day, and the person who did it is a mom who knows nothing about furniture renovation.
But it’s ‘easy’, so she did it on her own, with only a wrench and good lighting.
Now, what do you think would happen if you tried to do that same thing? I’ll tell you from experience – a mess.
What the TikTok mom didn’t tell you is that she had a whole filming crew behind her AND a contractor who did most of the work.
This is the kind of project you’ll regret once you start it, and it’s not the only one.
5 Common DIY Home Projects That Spiral Out of Control
If you think a TikTok video was my inspiration for this article, well… You’re right…and wrong.
But I actually have a friend in Oregon who’s a contractor, and I talked to him about this, too. Plus, my husband and I have tried a few of these ourselves.
He’s just as annoyed as I am because social media makes his job look almost like child’s play. It’s like a regular Joe who never once held a wrench in his hand, but can (somehow, miracle, I guess) do almost everything a pro can.
And after a while, the friend wanted to make a career out of that and went on to get his license to work in Oregon. He unfortunately failed the licensing exam on his first try. So what he did was sign up for an Oregon contractor license course – this really helped him get up to speed with everything, after which he aced the exam easily.
Once that was out of the way, he was finally able to work properly (and legally).
Buy, yeah, when you think about all you have to go through to get here, I’ll tell you, it’s infuriating.
So, here are some projects I can pretty much guarantee you’ll regret starting.
1. Tearing Down Walls Without Knowing What’s Inside
You watch Property Brothers knocking down walls and making the house feel like it’s twice as big, so naturally, you want to give that a go.
The problem here is that there’s electrical wiring inside those walls and plumbing pipes. The first can shock (and kill) you, while the others can flood the house. No biggie. Right?
Yeah, so no pressure, just keep in mind that one single wrong cut, and your entire DIY Saturday will turn into a nightmare (followed by a hefty bill).
Also, some walls are holding up the floor above you, so if you move those and don’t put a support beam, your home becomes dangerous.
Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of areas require a permit before you start messing with the walls, so that’s another obstacle. Basically, don’t touch your walls unless there’s a professional around.

2. DIY Bathroom Remodels
If you want to lose a lot of money really fast, a DIY home project bathroom remodel is the perfect way to do that.
These things (almost) NEVER stay on budget.
But because the bathroom is a relatively small room, you feel like you can handle it, and it won’t take very long or cost a lot. So, you start to pull up old flooring, all happy and thinking about how great the new one will look. And then there’s water damage underneath it, and there’s also mold growing behind the drywall.
Your project went from renovation to fixing problems you had no idea you had.
And what does this mean? It means it won’t be cheap. You’ll have to pay. You’ll need all kinds of things (e.g., waterproofing materials, tile clutter, plumbing adapters, replacement fixtures, etc., etc.), and you’ll also need a licensed pro to sort all that out for you (unless you’re the pro).
If you still aren’t sold on this, then just imagine the entire family being forced to use only one bathroom for weeks on end (or a worse scenario, you’ll have to go to the neighbor). And if you’ve got teenagers, then.. Well, you’re creative enough to imagine the stress here.
3. Installing Flooring Without Actually Preparing for It
You know those flooring videos, where the planks all click together, and the room suddenly looks brand new?
Man, if those aren’t satisfying, I don’t know what is.
But I know from experience (when my husband took up broken tile flooring on our entire first floor to replace it with hardwood flooring) that there are often surprises lying underneath.
It’s too bad you don’t see what happens before that moment, because that would be enough to make you never want to give it a try.
The subfloor could be uneven, so if you put new flooring on top of that, it’ll crack or buckle within a few months. You’ll need to fix that unevenness first, which means grinding down the bumps or pouring leveling compound.
And that’s messy work that takes all day to finish. Moisture is an issue, too, because concrete slabs let moisture get up and ruin your floors unless you put down a vapor barrier first.

4. Backyard Projects
Some backyard projects are fun and quick. But if they involve decks, patios, and retaining walls, you’ll probably regret starting that.
The outdoors is full of problems; even the ground isn’t your friend. It’s usually uneven, so if you want to fix it, you’ll have to dig and haul dirt, which is heavy labor, and it ALWAYS takes more time than you think it will.
Then you’ve got drainage.
To be blunt, most people forget about drainage. Why? I don’t know. But it’s extremely important. Think about it – all the water (washing, rain, snow melting, etc.) needs to go somewhere. If you don’t account for that, you’ll have to deal with damage caused by accumulated water. Then… then you’re in for a massive headache (and a hefty bill to pay).
Also, keep in mind that you’re working outside. This means that even a bit of unexpected rain or a strong gust of wind could ruin your fun.
Also, if you’re trying to build an actual structure, then keep in mind that you’ll also need to get a permit first, plan the whole thing, and then you’ll also likely need a license to (legally) complete the project.
5. Painting Cabinets Instead of Replacing Them
Budget DIY home projects such as kitchen makeovers are quite trendy (especially on social media), so of course, painting cabinets became a thing.
You see the whole family with their paint brushes, all happy and smiling, painting away, and admiring their work.
In reality, you need a good amount of paperwork for this, which takes forever and is absolutely miserable.
If you find yourself making a massive mess out of this, or you’re lacking all the tools required, or you simply don’t have the required space to actually paint the pieces and have the paint dry properly, then it’s probably best to replace them (a.k.a. buy new ones).
Also, if you’re unsure about all this, just imagine all the sanding dust you’ll have to clean up for weeks to come just because you wanted to save a couple of bucks. Yikes!

Conclusion
Don’t trust home makeover videos, that’s all I’m saying.
They never show you everything that needs to be done for the final product to look like it does, and if you try to do it on your own, there’s a good chance you’ll kick yourself for it.
With that being said, I don’t think that every DIY project is a bad idea. Some of them are incredibly fun, especially if you include the whole family in it.
But if the project ends up requiring power tools, it will leave a huge mess (e.g., sanding dust), will require you to first have a license, etc., etc. – then the entire project will turn into something exciting you’ve never expected.
But in a bad way, of course.
