Two of my kids had horrible eczema when they were little. We literally tried every. Single. Lotion. On the market (except for prescriptions) to clear it up for them. NOTHING worked.

Then I started researching lotion bars and experimenting with making them. I used the bars on my boys after their evening bath and in just days their eczema was COMPLETELY cleared up.

Do homemade lotion bars really work?

In our experience, YES!

Obviously, I can’t promise the same kind of thing will happen to you. I just know what our experience was. Once I found that it worked, I started researching how to make them myself.

Once I learned how I never looked back. Ever since then, I’ve made lotion bars.

I’ve even shared These lotion bars with friends and family. They’re so easy to make and so beneficial….why not?!

What is a lotion bar?

Hard lotion bars are blocks of lotion that are solid to the touch. And then they melt against your skin’s warmth and moisturize your skin.

Use natural ingredient lotion bars in place of traditional types of lotion as part of your natural skin care routine.

DIY lotion bars use natural ingredients – free from preservatives. They stay solid at room temperature but melt a little from body heat.

That makes it easy to apply lotion as needed and store it in a reusable container. I even leave mine out on my bathroom counter on a pretty soap dish!

FAQs

Here are a few common questions I see readers ask about making this project. If you don’t see your question below, please leave it in the comments!

How do I add fragrance to lotion bars?

You add fragrance to lotion bars and other DIY bath and beauty items by either using fragrance oil or essential oils to add any scent you like.

FYI: Rocky Mountain Oils are the BEST essential oils!

Can you use lotion bars in the shower?

Use them right after you DRY OFF from the shower for instant and lasting hydration.

The golden rule of body lotion application is to “apply immediately after shower to seal in moisture.” This also applies to moisturizing lotion bars and using them this way will lock in that moisture!

Lotion bars will transform your skin moisturizing experience! After finishing your shower, simply take the solid lotion bar and smooth it over the areas needing moisture. The lotion glides on, absorbs quickly, and seals in moisture all day for soft skin you’ll love.

Add your favorite lotion bar to your skin care routine and you’ll never look back.

How long do lotion bars last?

A small bar can last about 2 weeks if used daily. The less you use it, the longer it will last.

However, the thing about lotion bars is that as you regularly use them, your skin will become so hydrated and soft that you won’t need to re-apply as often. That means your lotion bars will last even longer!

Are lotion bars better than lotion?

YES! It has superior moisturizing capability compared to water-based lotions because it contains entirely ultra-moisturizing ingredients such as cocoa butter, Vitamin E oil, shea butter, or coconut oil.

This combination of hydrating oils, with beeswax or a vegetable-based wax, is a match made in (hydration) heaven!

Is beeswax good for the skin?

Beeswax is a humectant, meaning it attracts water, and creates a protective layer on the skin. When used in lotion bars, the beeswax will work double-duty to keep your skin hydrated and soft.

Can I make lotion bars with tallow wax or soy wax instead?

Soy wax is made from the oils in soybeans. Tallow wax is rendered from the fat of animals and would be a less expensive option.

These two types of wax are pure white so therefore will create a white lotion bar. These types of butter are rich in essential fatty acids that help condition the skin. They also add a solid quality to the bar.

What is the best plant-based wax to use?

There are a few plant-based alternatives that will work for this recipe. The two most common are candelilla wax and carnauba wax.

Carnauba wax comes from the leaves of a Brazilian palm tree. Carnauba wax is the cheaper of the two, therefore making it a little more cost-effective for your lotion bars.

Could I use a double boiler instead of a microwave bowl or sauce pan?

Yes! Honestly, I probably use my double boiler to melt and combine my oil mixture more often than I use anything else. It’s a great way to create a controlled melting process for this DIY bar recipe.
