How to Make A Mushroom Fairy House
The process is simple, and it can easily be adapted to accommodate different decoration items that your kids want to use!
Step 1
With the white bowl, turn it upside down and then draw abstract shapes and circles with the red marker.
Step 2
Color in each shape. Kids can practice staying in the lines when coloring and making shapes.
Step 3
Now flip the cup upside down. Cut a line with the scissors approximately 1 1/2″ up and 1″ to the left from any side of the opening. Bend the opening back to make a crease for a door.
Step 4
Glue the acorn capsule to the door. This is the handle for your fairy door. 🙂
Step 5
Next, cut up some of the faux greenery into 2 1/2 to 3″ pieces. Hot glue the greenery on both sides of the door.
Step 6
Then, fill in all around the sides of the cup.
Step 7
Finally, glue the paper bowl to the top of the upside-down cup.
And your mushroom-style fairy house is complete!

DIY Mushroom Fairy House Project Notes And Tips
- Paper or cardboard type bowls will work best for this craft. Plastic plates will not work well especially when trying to draw shapes on the top as it will smear.
- If you are using a hot glue gun, I would recommend making sure there is adult supervision while the children are working on this craft project.
- Offer a variety of marker colors, cups and bowls which will inspire a variety of color combinations.
- Clear glue sticks would probably be the best option, but you can certainly add some great pops of color with the colored glue sticks if that is your preference. 😁
Variations To Of The Mushroom Fairy House Try
- If the bowl is white on the outside but a different color on the inside, that is fine. Who says all the mushrooms have to be the same color?
- Use a large piece of cardboard to use as the base to make a mushroom village. Glue your houses on the cardboard and add all your fun greenery and decorations around the village.
- Use different size bowls and red cups to create mushrooms of all sizes. Hello mushroom village!
- Instead of the acorn capsule as the door handle, use a button, seashells or plastic beads.
- Personalize your houses with some decorative touches such as stickers, glitter, and any other type of bling that you (or your kids) love!
- Try different types of greenery or items like leaves or mini wood slides as a bench.
FAQs
Do I have to use a hot glue gun or will another type of glue work just as well?
You can use something other than a glue gun. There are a number of different options such as craft glue, super glue, or PVA glue that will work too.
Hot glue is just my favorite because it’s so easy and less messy than other types of glue.

Can I use items I find outside instead of store-bought craft items for my DIY Mushroom Fairy House?
That is a fantastic idea! Go on a scavenger hunt and search for items to use such as leaves, small twigs, pinecones, buckeyes, rose hips, acorns, and more. These would be perfect to add decoration to the outside of your mushroom fairy house!
