Adorable DIY Wood Slice Rudolph Ornaments

Every year my kids and I put all of their homemade ornaments, school ornaments, and fun ornaments on our tree, and it’s one of my favorite things to do as we decorate the tree!

I love homemade and rustic decor, but actually have precious little of it. Anything natural-looking is gorgeous to me. So, I figured it was time to make a homemade Christmas ornament myself 😉

In full disclosure, I did make these Snowflake Apple Cinnamon Dough Ornaments, but they’re a completely different type of ornament!

Today I am sharing with you some quick DIY wood slice ornaments for Christmas I recently made that you’re gonna love. Say “hello” to these adorable Rudolph ornaments!

This will look great on your tree and would also make a great DIY gift!

DIY Wood Slice Rudolph Ornaments

I used to buy personalized ornaments to mark special moments that happened during the year – like the birth of a baby, learning to ride a bike, etc.

But in my heart of hearts, I REALLY love homemade Christmas ornaments.

Plus, we’ve passed the point for most of those cute milestones. I have LOTS of homemade ornaments from previous kids’ projects, and I treasure them. AND I want to get in on the fun too!

I was surfing around on the web one day and saw some really cute DIY wood slice ornaments that caught my attention. I went on about my business but couldn’t get them out of my head. They were Santas, and they really caught my eye 😉

So I decided to make some wood slice ornaments myself – but I wanted to take my own spin on it. That’s when these DIY Rudolph ornaments came about.

Rudolph Wood Slice Ornaments Project Materials Needed

Level: Easy

Time: 10 minutes

• Craft wood slices (1 large, 1 small)
• Red craft ribbon, cut to 8” in length
• Stapler OR Hot glue gun and glue
• 1 Gold pipe cleaner
• Scissors
• Brown craft foam sheet
• 1 Red craft pompom
• 2 Adhesive Wiggle Googly Eyes
• Black Sharpie

How To Make Rudolph Ornaments For Christmas

Follow these step-by-step instructions to make your own adorable DIY Rudolph ornaments.

Step 1 – Make the Hanger

Fold the ribbon in half, and place the ends on the back of the large wood slice. Attach it to the back of your wood slice with dabs of hot glue.

If you open a stapler, and place it flush against the ribbon, and staple it to the top of the wood slice. I stapled it twice to ensure it was securely attached.

Step 2 – Make the Antlers

Your Rudolph wood slice ornaments need antlers! Cut a piece of the gold pipe cleaner, approximately 2” long.

Cut an additional piece of pipe cleaner approximately 1 ½” long. Place the shorter piece behind the longer piece of pipe cleaner in the shape of a cross. Twist the shorter pipe cleaner once around the longer piece to attach, and then angle upwards to form an antler.

Place the antler to the left of the ribbon, and attach it to the wood slice with a dab of hot glue. Repeat this process to make the right antler, and attach it with a dab of hot glue to the wood slice.

Step 3 – Make the Ears

Cut a 1” strip of the foam sheet. Fold the end of the strip up approximately 1 ½”.

Cut out a marquis shape to make the ears. You may need to cut again to separate the ears.

Place the foam ears to the left and right of the gold pipe cleaner antlers, and attach to the wood slice using a stapler.

Step 4 – Add the Snout

Flip the large wood slice over, and hot glue the small wood slice to the bottom center. Let cool for a minute.

Step 5 – Add the Nose

Glue a red pompom to the top center of the small wood slice.

Step 6 – Add the Eyes

Take the adhesive eyes, remove the backing, and place each one on the large wood slice above the pompom nose.

Step 7 – Add the Finishing Touches to your Rudolph ornaments

Using a permanent black marker, draw a mouth under the red nose. Wood slice ornaments done? Yes! Hang it on the tree or wrap it up as a gift!

Can Kids Make This Craft?

Short answer: yes!

Longer answer: use your best judgment as a parent. You know your child better than anyone else. The most dangerous part of this craft is using the hot glue gun or stapler.

If you feel comfortable letting your child use those items – or just stepping in enough to do that for her, then yes, your child can absolutely make it!

Can You Give Rudolph Ornaments as a Gift?

Yes! Homemade gifts are my FAVORITE to give – and get. They are cheaper, cuter, sometimes healthier/more natural, more meaningful, and more personal than purchased gifts.

But, I fully recognize that I’m also not a professional crafter, and there is DEFINITELY a limit to my crafting abilities! That’s why crafts like this one are PERFECT for my abilities – and desires.
