Benefits of Lavender Bath Salts
Lavender bath salts offer multiple advantages:
- Promote sleep and relaxation – I find the calming properties of lavender help reduce anxiety and restlessness
- Muscle pain and inflammation – lavender bath salts (thanks to the magnesium sulfate in Epsom salts) provide relief when I have sore muscles after teaching class. And the lavender offers anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits.
- Skin benefits – lavender bath salts exfoliate and leave skin feeling soft and rejuvenated. The antimicrobial properties of lavender are antimicrobial and help heal minor cuts.
- Aromatherapy – lavender is well known to improve mood.
Essential Ingredients For Homemade Lavender Bath Salts
Creating your own lavender bath salts at home is simple and rewarding. By using quality ingredients, you can enhance your bath experience and enjoy the relaxing benefits.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil provides a calming scent and is with therapeutic benefits, including reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
When I make my bath salts, I usually add about 20 drops of lavender essential oil per cup of salt so the scent is soothing but not overpowering.
Epsom Salts and Sea Salt
Epsom salts and sea salt dissolve in water, releasing magnesium and other minerals that help relax muscles, improve circulation, and detoxify the skin. Sea salt adds even more minerals – sometimes I use it and sometimes I leave it out.
TIP: If I use sea salt, I mix in half a cup of sea salt for every cup of Epsom salts.
Dried Lavender Buds
Adding dried lavender buds enhances the visual appeal of the bath salts and also subtly boosts the lavender aroma.
They are easy to find online or in health food stores or you can dry your own if you grow lavender in your garden (like me!). The buds release a mild fragrance when they get wet, complementing the essential oil.

Variations To Try
Customizing this recipe is simple!
You can add 10 drops of chamomile essential oil for an extra calming effect, or eucalyptus is a great complementary scent.
Try adding ¼ cup baking soda to help soften the skin.
To change the texture, consider the type of salt used. Finer salts dissolve quickly in the bath, while coarser salts provide a more luxurious feel.
Additionally, adding a tablespoon of carrier oil, such as jojoba or sweet almond oil, can help moisturize the skin.
Adding oat powder is great for soothing itchy skin!
Storing and Preservation Tips
Proper storage is essential to maintain the quality and potency of your lavender bath salts. Use an airtight glass container for best results. Mason jars are a great option.
Store in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.
TIP: Avoid plastic containers, as they can absorb the scent and potentially leach harmful chemicals into your mixture.
Label your jar with the ingredients and date to keep track of its freshness. Homemade bath salts can last up to six months when stored properly.
How To Use Lavender Bath Salts
A hot bath at the end of the day before heading to bed is pure heaven! For a truly relaxing bath, I make sure my bathwater is comfortably warm, typically around 98°F to 100°F. This temperature is perfect for easing muscle tension and promoting relaxation.
I like to fill my tub with about one cup of lavender bath salts and let it dissolve completely in the warm water before getting in.
And to complete the experience, I often light a few candles and play soft music or nature sounds. Or I might take the time to enjoy a great book!
Frequency and Duration Tips
The frequency of using them can vary, but I find that two to three times a week works best for me. This helps to maintain soft skin and reduce stress without drying out my skin.
Each bath should ideally last between 20 to 30 minutes to receive the benefits without overstressing the skin or body.
I always make sure to dry off gently with a soft towel and apply a good moisturizer to lock in hydration and keep my skin soft.
