How To Make Halloween Mummy Jalapeno Poppers

The process for making mummy-wrapped jalapeno poppers really is super easy. Halloween if often filled with sugary treats (and I have plenty of those too), but if you’re looking for something savory, give these rich and cheesy mummies a try!

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Rinse the jalapenos in cold water, and cut in half lengthwise. Remove seeds.
  3. Add softened cream cheese and bacon pieces (and green onions, if using) to a small bowl and stir until combined.
  4. Cut the olives in half.
  5. Fill each jalapeno half with cream cheese and bacon mixture.
  6. Place two olives towards the top of each jalapeno to make the eyeballs.
  7. Separate the crescent rolls into 4 parts, and press down on the perforation to make each one a solid sheet. Using a large sharp knife, cut each of the 4 sections into 9 thin strips.
  8. Wrap each jalapeno with 3 strips of crescent roll, going from top to bottom, then back down.
  9. Place the wrapped jalapenos onto the baking sheet and bake for 17-20 minutes.
  10. Remove from oven and enjoy!

Recipes Notes And Tips

  • These mummy jalapeno poppers taste best straight from the oven but work at room temperature too 😁
  • The seeds are where the heat is. If you want these poppers to be pretty mild, make sure you remove all the seeds (and the inner membrane). If you want a little more kick, leave a few seeds in your jalapenos!
  • I removed the jalapeno stems, but if you’re planning to serve this as an appetizer for a group, you could leave the stems on for easier grabbing.
  • I thought these mummy jalapeno poppers browned up nicely without an egg wash. But if you want that rich browned look, feel free to beating 2 eggs and brushing it on your poppers just before popping them in the oven.
  • This recipe is based on using medium-sized jalapenos. If you’re using large jalapenos, they will still be a little firm out of the oven. Feel free to test one with a fork to see how firm it is. If you want it to be a little more tender, put the tray back in the oven and add 1-2 minutes until the desired softness.
  • Don’t fill your jalapenos too full or the cheese mixture will overflow and create a mess.

Variations To Try

I used olive slices as the eyes for these Halloween jalapeno poppers, but you could just as easily use candy eyes for a totally different look! I just wanted to stay away from the candy on ONE Halloween treat, lol!

  • Want a little more flavor? Add 1 tsp onion powder and/or 1/4 tsp garlic powder.
  • Love smokey flavor? Add a 1/4 – 1/2 tsp smoked paprika to your cheese mixture.
  • Prefer using fresh bacon? Just cooking up about 5 pieces of bacon (or turkey bacon) and crumble them up before adding them to your cheese mixture.
  • Want to change up the cheese? Try adding some colby jack to your cream cheese mixture. Or use Monterey Jack, Pepper Jack, Smoked cheddar, Swiss or even Gouda!
  • Dress up with toppings! Serve alongside some guac, diced tomatoes, salsa, or sour cream.

FAQs

Can you prep this appetizer ahead of time?

These are super duper easy to make. The labor-intensive time is just wrapping the jalapenos with the crescent rolls! If you want to prep them ahead of time, you can make them up to 24 hours in advance (but don’t bake) and kept in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Note– you can even bake them ahead of time, but they taste so much better fresh out of the oven!

When handling the peppers, please wear gloves OR wash your hands before and after handling them.

Slice the peppers open with a knife and use a serrated grapefruit spoon to scoop out the seeds and membrane. #easy

How long do jalapeno poppers last?

You can store your baked mummy jalapeno poppers in the fridge for up to 2 days. After that, they’ll get soggy and just generally unappetizing.

Yes! They’ll store well in the freezer for up to 3 months. Here’s how:

  • Prepare your jalapeno poppers as instructed BUT DON’T wrap the crescent rolls or add the olives.
  • Place the stuffed peppers side-by-side in an air-tight, freezer-safe bag and freeze for a few hours.
  • After your poppers are frozen, squeeze any extra air out of the bag and seal it.
  • Label your bag and store them in your freezer until you’re ready to use them!

To use them, place your bag of poppers out on the counter for a couple of hours until thawed, and then wrap them in crescent rolls, add the eyes, and bake.
