What are Witch Hat Cookies?

Witch’s Hat Cookies are simply cookies (of whatever variety you prefer) that are decorated with Hershey kisses and colored sprinkles so that it looks like a witch’s hat.

This is one Halloween treat that’s perfect for getting the kids involved. One fun way to do that is to let the kids decorate their own cookies at their Halloween party at school. They love that! 😁

Or make them with your own kids (or grandkids!) at home around Halloween. You could do the same idea with a play date – make these festive treats and let the kids decorate them as witches!

Decorating Witch Hat Cookies – Tips And Tricks

To help ensure that these ghoulish cookies turn out perfectly every time here are a few tips to help with decorating.

  • If your frosting is too thick, simply add just a little more heavy cream (or milk) to thin it out. You want it somewhere between thick and thin, erring on the side of too thick rather than too thin.
  • When decorating with small children, make clean up a breeze by covering your workspace with parchment paper. Your counters will stay clean, and you can just throw away the wax paper! Another option is to use a clean cookie sheet to catch all the mess!

Variations To Try

Different cookies – I personally love the homemade taste and look of these cookies. However, if you prefer something different (or need a time-saving option), try:

  • Keebler fudge stripe cookies
  • Sugar cookies (they could even be dyed a different color!)
  • Gluten-free cookies
  • Chocolate chip cookies

Change The Frosting Color – If orange isn’t your thing – or you want different colored hats – change the frosting color to anything you want: green, purple, black, or any color!

Change The Hershey’s Kiss – Another simple way to change the look of these cookies or add variety if you’re making a bunch is to use different kinds of Hershey’s Kisses. White chocolate, swirled, cookies & cream…so many options!

Different Decorations – I used Halloween sprinkles because I thought they were cute and fun. Change up the types of sprinkles or use even nonpareils.

Make Them Gluten-Free

To make these adorable witch hat cookies gluten-free, substitute a gluten-free flour mix for the all-purpose flour. Or alternatively, you could buy gluten-free cookies to save time and use them!

Happy Halloween!
