Summer time is just around the corner, and I’ve got summer holidays on the brain. It’s time to start breaking out anything and everything red, white, and blue!
This recipe looks complicated and impressive, but it’s actually super easy! You can use a homemade cake recipe and homemade buttercream frosting, but I decided to save time by using box cake mix and canned frosting.

Red, White, and Blue Cupcakes Recipe Tips
Here are a few tips and tricks to ensure that this recipe turns out perfectly every time!
- I highly recommend using gel-paste food coloring. Thanks to the super-concentrated color, you will use less at a time and achieve more intense, bold colors. Plus, the liquid food coloring can “water down” your batter – that’s bad!
- If you want really white cupcakes, use clear vanilla extract instead of normal vanilla extract.
Variations To Try
- Play Colored Dough Layers – I layered the different colors, but you could try different combos of color patterns. You could different color batters into each muffin cup in thirds. Another option is to swirl the colors together, making an almost tie-dye pattern.
- Color The Frosting – I chose to use white frosting and then use sprinkles to color it. However, you could swirl together colors of frosting using the same technique I used for my Rainbow Unicorn Cupcakes.
- Add toothpick flags to the frosting – wouldn’t that be cute?
