Peach cobbler has been a go-to for me and our family for years. It’s a delicious treat that’s perfect for summer.

Today, I have an irresistible variation of peach cobbler to share: Peach Dump Cake. Dump cake is similar to cobbler, but instead of fresh fruit and a flour mixture, it often uses cake mix as the base with some sort of fruit filling.

I guess you could even call it a dump peach cobbler!

Dump cake gets its name because you can just “dump” all the ingredients together, bake it (or put it in the slow cooker), and enjoy. It’s seriously one of the easiest desserts you can whip up!

My kids have been begging me to make a peach cobbler recently, but I wanted to change things up but still make a simple dessert, so I decided it was time to try making a Peach Dump Cake.

Oh my! Am I so glad that I did!

And the kids LOVED it!

I’m sure you’ll love it for the same reasons we do! It’s:

  • Crazy easy (even perfect for “non bakers”)
  • Always turns out yummy and amazing
  • Perfect dessert all year long

Ingredients For Peach Dump Cake

This easy peach dump cake recipe requires just a few simple ingredients:

  • Sliced peaches in juice
  • Box of Yellow cake mix – dry cake mix provides the cake texture and structure so your dump cake turns out perfectly every time
  • Butter – melted so it’s a time saver. I use salted, but you can use unsalted if you prefer.
  • Cinnamon
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream – for serving (optional)

Step 1 – PREP

Preheat the oven to 350°F and spray your 9×13 baking dish or casserole dish with cooking spray. Spread the can of peaches, with their liquid, to cover the bottom of your casserole dish.

Step 2 – LAYER

Sprinkle cinnamon on top of the peaches. Combine the box of cake mix and melted butter and spread the batter evenly over the peaches.

NOTE: I like to add a couple of peaches on top of the cake mix because I think it looks nice!

Canned Peaches vs. Fresh Peaches

I love the no-fuss ease of layering ingredients in a baking pan – it’s what makes dump cakes so special and popular!

And using canned peaches in juice is my choice to control sweetness and consistency.

However, you can replace the canned peaches with fresh or frozen peaches. Here’s how:

Using Fresh Peaches – Slice about 6 cups of fresh peaches. Depending on how sweet they are, you might consider adding a small amount (about 1/4 cup) of brown sugar.

Using Frozen Peaches – I buy sliced frozen peaches and use two 10oz packages. To use them, thaw the peaches first in the microwave and add about 1/4 cup of brown sugar. Then, proceed with the recipe as written.

Peach Dump Cake Expert Tips

This Peach Dump Cake is so easy and delicious it’s sure to become a family favorite! Here are a few handy tips when baking this tasty treat:

  • I prefer to use sliced peaches in 100% juice (instead of heavy syrup) because they are juicy, sweet, and perfectly peachy without being too sweet.
  • Don’t mix the layers – Whether you use a baking dish or a crockpot, don’t mix the fruit layer into the cake layer.
  • Cooking time varies – Consider it an estimate because oven and Crock Pot cooking times can vary. Keep an eye on your peach dump cake as it cooks so you can see when it’s done.
  • Don’t add sugar unless you’re using fresh or frozen fruit – The peach juice or syrup combines with the sweetness of the cake mix. I only recommend adding extra sugar if you use fresh or frozen fruit.
  • Don’t drain the liquid from the peaches – You’ll need it for proper cooking.
  • Let your peach dump cake cool just a little to thicken before serving.

Peach Dump Cake Variations To Try

  • Add 1/2 cup chopped pecans to your batter – Adding the nutty flavor and crunch makes this dish even better!
  • Sprinkle chopped nuts (ex: pecans or walnuts) on top for a little crunch.
  • Add 1/2 tsp of almond extract to the batter before baking for a delicious hint of nutty flavor.
  • Create a crumb topping with butter, brown sugar, chopped nuts (optional), oats, and flour. Sprinkle over the top before baking to create a dessert similar to a peach crisp.
  • Mix brown sugar and ground cinnamon together and sprinkle over the top before baking (don’t do this if you’re making the crumb topping)
  • Use a white cake mix instead of yellow – I prefer yellow, but either works!
  • Fruit – Substitute other canned fruit for the peaches, such as sliced pears in juice or fruit cocktail in juice.
  • Pie Filling – If you really want to change things up, use peach, apple, cherry, strawberry or blueberry pie filling instead of sliced fruit.

Make It In A Crock Pot

Dump the peaches and juice (or syrup) in the bottom of a greased slow cooker and sprinkle them with cinnamon. Melt your butter and mix it with your cake mix – break up any large pieces. Layer the cake batter over the peaches.

Cook on LOW for 4 hours or HIGH for 2 hours.

Make It Gluten-Free

Simply replace the boxed cake mix with a gluten-free cake mix. Also, make sure that any add-ins are gluten-free.

Make It Dairy-Free

You could use dairy-free butter or coconut oil instead of butter.

Storing Tips For Peach Dump Cake

STORE – Place leftover Peach Dump Cake in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave before serving to give it that fresh-baked taste.

FREEZE – Cool your peach dump cake completely. Then wrap your baking dish with plastic wrap and a layer of aluminum foil or store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To reheat, thaw it in the fridge overnight. Reheat it in the microwave or a 350° oven until warmed through before serving.
