How to Make Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries

Follow these steps to make adorable lovebirds right at home. They only take about 10 minutes!

Step 1

Cut the crown and all leaves off each strawberry, making them flat on the top.

Step 2

Heat the chocolate melts according to package directions. (I heated in the microwave at 1 minute for 50% power. Stirred, and then heated again for 30 seconds at 50% power.)

Repeat if necessary in 30-second intervals until melted and creamy

Step 3

Insert a lollipop stick or wooden skewer into the top of the cut strawberry, making sure not to push all the way through.

Step 4

Remove from the lollipop stick and place onto a parchment lined plate or flat baking sheet. I used a fork to slowly remove from the stick by lifting the strawberry up, and off the stick.

Immediately add two upside-down heart sprinkles as the ears. Next, add two eyeball sprinkles.

If the chocolate has already hardened on the strawberry, dip the tip of a knife in the remaining melted chocolate, and add a tiny dab to the back of each eyeball to help them adhere.

Last, add another heart sprinkle as the beak, centered under the eyes, again using the extra chocolate if necessary to attach.

Step 5

Repeat this process until all strawberries are dipped and decorated. Let them sit until they set for around 2-3 minutes before serving.

Can I use Frozen Strawberries?

No, you really need to use fresh strawberries because frozen strawberries are too soft and liquidy to work for this recipe.

How Should I Store Them?

These Valentine’s chocolate-covered strawberries can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They cannot be stored at room temperature.

How Long Will They Last?

If stored properly in the fridge, they should last for up to 48 hours – if they haven’t been eaten long before then!

How to Decorate Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

You’d think it would be easy to dip and decorate strawberries. It is – however – there are a few things to know that will help make the process easier and make the final product look better.

  • Make sure your strawberries are dry before dipping them. Simply pat them dry with a paper towel to ensure that the candy melts stick to the strawberries.
  • When melting the chocolate melts, know that they can be a little temperamental and burn easily. Be sure that when you melt them in the microwave, you only cook for short periods of time (30 seconds) and stir well in between.
  • If you aren’t comfortable melting your chocolate in the microwave, you can melt it in a double boiler which is not quite as fast as the microwave method but also presents less risk of burning the chocolate.
  • Wearing gloves helps prevent any fingerprints from implanting into your chocolate coating, ensuring that it’s nice and smooth.

Adorable Valentine's chocolate-covered strawberries. They are decorated as love birds and are as cute to look at as they are delicious to eat. And they're ready in just 10 minutes!

Ingredients

  • 3⁄4 c light chocolate candy melts
  • 12 strawberries
  • Knife
  • Lollipop stick or wooden skewer
  • Silicone spatula
  • Fork
  • Parchment paper
  • Plate (or another flat surface)
  • 24 candy eyeballs
  • 36 heart sprinkles in red, pink, and white

Instructions

Step 1

Cut the crown and all leaves off of each strawberry, making them flat on the top.

Step 2

Heat the chocolate melts according to package directions.

I recommend heating them in the microwave at 50% power for 1 minute. Stir and repeat the process for 30-seconds intervals as many times as necessary until it's melted and creamy.

Step 3

Insert a lollipop stick or wooden skewer into the top of the cut strawberry, making sure not to push all the way through.

Dip the strawberry into the melted chocolate candy, twisting to get chocolate all the way around the strawberry.

Step 4

Remove from the lollipop stick and place onto a parchment-lined plate or flat baking sheet. I used a fork to slowly remove from the stick by lifting the strawberry up, and off of the stick.

Immediately add two upside-down heart sprinkles as the ears before the chocolate sets.
