How To Make Witch Hat Cookies
Here’s the entire process for making these cookies from start to finish. Because these cookies are made from scratch, they take a little longer than other versions (see note about quicker alternatives below).
Cookies
- Whisk together flour, corn starch, cocoa powder, and salt.
- With an electric mixer combine butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in egg and vanilla and continue to mix until well blended.
- Gradually add in flour mixture, mixing well after each addition.
- Roll dough into a log with a diameter of about 1 ½ inches. Wrap with parchment or wax paper and place in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
- When ready to bake-
- Preheat the oven to 350
- Carefully slice the dough into ¼- ½ inch slices and place on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-12 minutes or until set.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool on the baking sheet for 2-3 minutes, remove to cooling rack to cool completely.
Frosting
- In the bowl of an electric mixer mix butter until light and fluffy.
- Add in powdered sugar a little at a time mixing between each addition.
- Slowly add cream, vanilla, and orange food coloring then mix thoroughly.
- Add additional food coloring if needed to achieve the desired flavor.
Building You Halloween Witch Hat Cookies
- Using a piping bag pipe a small dot of frosting on the bottom of an unwrapped Hershey’s kiss. Place it in the center of a cookie.
- Pipe frosting around the edge of the Hershey’s Kiss and sprinkle with sprinkles.
- Repeat until all cookies are decorated.
- Store in an airtight container until ready to serve.
Decorating Witch Hat Cookies – Tips And Tricks
To help ensure that these ghoulish cookies turn out perfectly every time here are a few tips to help with decorating.
- If you find your frosting is too thick, simply add just a little more heavy cream (or milk) to thin it out. You want it somewhere between thick and thin, erring on the side of too thick rather than too thin.
- When decorating with small children, make clean up a breeze by covering your workspace with parchment paper. Your counters will stay clean and you can just throw away the wax paper!
Recipe Variations of Witch Hat Cookies That You Can Try Out
Different cookies – I personally love the homemade taste and look of these cookies. However, if you prefer something different (or need a time-saving option), try:
- Fudge-striped cookies
- Sugar cookies (they could even be dyed a different color!)
- Gluten-free cookies
- Chocolate chip cookies
Change The Frosting Color – If orange isn’t your thing – or you want different colored hats – change the frosting color to anything you want: green, purple, black, or any color!
Change The Hershey’s Kiss – Another simple way to change the look of these cookies or add variety if you’re making a bunch is to use different kinds of Hershey’s Kisses. White chocolate, swirled, cookies & cream…so many options!
Different Decorations – I used Halloween sprinkles because I thought they were cute and fun. Change up the types of sprinkles or use even nonpareils.
