What is a Shower Bomb?
Shower bombs are small tablets or balls infused with essential oils and aromatic scents that dissolve when they come in contact with water.
When the water hits them, the balls or tabs will begin to melt away releasing the benefits of the oils and the chosen scents.

How To Use Shower Bombs
The most common and suggested way to use your shower bomb is to put it on the floor of your shower. Allow the stream of water to hit it and release all of the essential oils and fragrant goodness.
Or, instead of placing the bomb on the bottom of the shower, put it on a ledge or next to your shampoo bottle so that it will still get a fair amount of water splashed on it to release the scents. This will also help in making the shower bomb last longer.
Recipe Notes and Tips
Adjust the amount of orange zest you add to the steamers to your liking. Zest the entire orange so you can add the amount you prefer or for the next time you make this recipe.
Each essential oil is different in its consistency. Some may be thicker than others so just be patient as you count out the 80 drops of oil. Or count fast if the oil is thinner. 😉
Variations to Try
Change up the shape of the mold. Stars, squares, circles, roses, hearts, letters…..the options are nearly endless. There are so many fun molds to choose from. (These would make perfect gifts for family, friends, or co-workers.)
Choose a different combinations of oils, scents and mica color:
- Lavendar/Bergamot with purple mica powder
- Peppermint/Rosemary with light green mica powder
- Cedarwood/Orange with orange mica powder
- Cardamon/Lemongrass with yellow mica powder
The combinations are literally limitless. These are just a few of my favs. Get creative and choose combinations that you love most!
FAQs About DIY Shower Bombs
Got questions about making shower bombs? You may find the answers down below.
What is the point of a shower bomb?
Shower bombs, much like their bath-foaming counterparts, help create a spa-like environment in your own home awakening your senses by providing a soothing blend of sweet-smelling scents and essential oils.
What’s the difference between bath bombs and shower bombs?
A shower bomb is used in a steamy shower so that when the water hits it, the fragrance and the oils are released into the air.
A bath bomb interacts directly with the skin in the bath water to help soften and moisturize.
Where do you place a shower bomb?
All you need to do is drop one or two steamers in the bottom of your shower and turn the water on.
My best advice is to keep it away from the drain so it doesn’t dissolve too quickly but also keep it as close under the water steam as possible to reap all the heavenly benefits.
How long do shower steamers last?
The ingredients in a shower steamer react when the water hits it releasing the scent and oils. The shower steamer can last up to 5 – 10 minutes but that depends on how much water directly hits the steamer.

Hello – I want to try making these with some friends but am not sure how much essential oil to use. What’s the best way to determine the drops, or if you need more less? I want everyone to be able to customize their own scent…but don’t want to over do it.
Hey Nina! Thanks for stopping by! The recipe calls for 80 drops of each essential oil – that’s a lot because these shower bombs are meant to be strong and wake you up 😉. If you want to do this with friends and everyone might want differing levels of scent, I recommend going by the smell. Put, say, 20 drops in and see how it smells. Then keep adding more in spurts until the mixture smells as strong as you/your friends would like the shower bombs to be. Does that make sense?
