Kids will love helping you melt the candy, put the hot cocoa and marshmallows inside, and best of all, watching the hot cocoa bombs come open and create luxurious hot cocoa to enjoy!
Ingredients Needed
- 4 oz white candy melts
- 3 tbsp cocoa mix
- ¼ cup mini marshmallows
- 1-2 oz green candy melts
- St Patrick’s Day sprinkles
- Semi Sphere Silicone Mold
How to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs
Here are my step-by-step instructions to walk you through making DIY hot cocoa bombs!
Step 1
Start by putting a plate in the freezer.
Step 2
Place the white candy melts in a heat-safe glass bowl, and heat in the microwave in 30-second increments.
Be sure to stir well after each time you heat them until the candy is fully melted.
Step 3
Spoon 1-2 tsp of melted candy into each cavity of the silicone mold.
Then use a spoon or brush to spread it, covering the entire cavity, making sure you get the sides really good.
Step 4
Place chocolate filled mold in the freezer for 5 minutes.
Step 5
Remove mold from freezer, coat with chocolate again and freeze for 5 minutes.
Step 6
Remove mold and the plate from the freezer, and carefully remove the chocolate spheres from the mold. Place them on the cold plate.
Step 7
Add 1 tbsp of hot cocoa mix to 3 of the chocolate spheres. Top with about 6-8 mini marshmallows.
Step 8
Heat a small plate in the microwave for 2 minutes.
Step 9
Place an empty half sphere upside down on the plate to let the edges soften. Place it on top of one of the filled half spheres, and smooth out the edges with your finger.
You can rub a little extra melted chocolate around it to fill in any gaps, if need be. Do this with the remaining spheres.
Step 10
In a very small bowl, heat the green candy melts for about 30 seconds and stir very well. Heat for an additional 30 seconds if needed, then stir until fully melted.
Step 11
Spoon melted candy into a piping bag or baggie, and cut the tip.
Pipe melted candy on the top of the hot cocoa bombs, and immediately add sprinkles.
Enjoy!
How to Enjoy DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs
To use, place one hot cocoa bomb in a mug. Pour 6 oz of hot milk over the hot chocolate bomb and watch the bombs “explode” as the chocolate melts and the stuff inside comes out!
You may add more cocoa mix to mug if you want more flavor (although you probably won’t need to).
Tips for Making St. Patrick’s Day DIY Hot Cocoa Bombs:
- If you would rather have green hot cocoa bombs with white on top, you can either use 1-2 drops of green food color in the melted chocolate or reverse the candy melts.
- Avoid fingerprints on your hot cocoa bombs by wearing gloves while making them.
What’s a Hot Cocoa Bomb?
At this point, you practically have to live under a rock not to have heard about the hot cocoa bomb craze that’s taken place.
But just in case you HAVE been living under that rock…here ya go:
It’s a hollow ball of chocolate filled with hot cocoa powder and sometimes other things like marshmallows or sprinkles.
Then the balls are decorated. When ready to use, place a decorated ball in a mug and pour hot milk over it. What happens after that…well, let’s just say the kids will be glued to watching it happen!
