This paper pumpkin lacing craft is a ton of fun for toddlers and preschoolers during the fall and Halloween season. Kids will love making this great craft and won’t even realize they are learning new skills.

Pumpkin crafts are a must for fall crafting, and my kids loved making this one. In the past, we did a fun twist on painting by making a Lego painting pumpkin.
Now, we’re working on lacing projects as we make cute pumpkins to add to our fall and Halloween decorations. We’re turning this cute pumpkin craft into an adorable jack o lantern.
This project is a great thing for children of all ages, but younger children (preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten children) will especially enjoy and benefit from this fun fall craft!

Pumpkin Lacing Craft Notes And Expert Tips
Be CREATIVE! – Follow the steps, but feel free to add your own flair.
Use a small strip of scotch tape and tape the end of the yarn, much like the end of a shoe lace. This will help to thread the yarn through the holes without getting frayed and impossible to push through the holes.
Be sure to cut the yarn a little longer than you think you might need. This will ensure that you have extra to work with when finished with the lacing.

How To Display Pumpkin Lacing Craft
- I’m a little old-school – I love to hang kids’ craft projects on my fridge!
- Hang them up on a thin string and hang them on the wall or on the fireplace. Even better, make several and turn them into a garland to hang (window, wall, or fireplace)!
- Hang the pumpkins in windows or on doors for the neighbors to enjoy.
- Have the kids write a little thank-you note on the back of the pumpkins and hand them out when they go trick-or-treating.
Variations To Try
- Instead of drawing the lines around the eyes and mouth of the pumpkin, you could also have your little one lace those areas for more practice!
- Cut the templates to any size you choose. Make a pumpkin family. 🎃
- Make a variety of shapes for the eyes and mouth of your pumpkins.
- Use the lacing method for different holidays and parties. For example, make a shamrock for St. Patrick’s Day, a heart for Valentine’s Day, or colored eggs for Easter.
- Use twisted or curled pipe cleaners for leaves.
- Cut the pumpkins the same size and stuff the inside with crinkled or shredded paper to make a puffy pumpkin.
- And why not sprinkle some glitter on for extra razzle dazzle!
- Love orange? Instead of cutting out a pumpkin in orange paper, you could let your little one have fun with orange paint and paint the pumpkin!
- Use orange yarn instead of the other colors.

Pumpkin Lacing Craft FAQs
Can I use a hot glue gun for the stem and leaf?
A hot glue gun is a great tool for this sort of craft project. However, you need to take into consideration the age of your crafters and the material you’re working with. If there are small children, an adult should work with the hot glue. Also, I prefer hot glue when working with felt instead of paper.
What size hole punch is best for this craft?
Great question! The most common size of hole punch is 5/16, which is the typical size of a paper binder hole. This is the size I would recommend, as it will be easier for the yarn to go through the hole.
What can I use instead of yarn?
I have a couple of fun and unique suggestions. I like to use jute cord. It will give your pumpkins an earthy, super cute look.
Do you have any embroidery floss? It would make a great alternative to yarn and be easy for small hands to work with.
One more…..rainbow twine is not only pretty but comes in many different colors, so you can change up the colors on all your pumpkins if you wish.
