What is the difference between a smoothie and a smoothie bowl?

It’s just a smoothie in a bowl instead of a cup, right? Not quite!

What is the main difference between a smoothie bowl and a smoothie you ask?

Typically, you will sip a smoothie with a straw and serve it in a cup. A smoothie bowl is thicker in consistency and can not be sipped through a straw.

With the smoothie bowl being thicker, it will allow for a healthy amount of toppings to be sprinkled on the top. That’s a plus because if you look at the photo it appears to look more like ice cream and less like a healthy treat. 😉

But that couldn’t be further from the truth. This smoothie is PACKED with natural ingredients to create the perfect healthy – yet decadent – dish.

Variations of Smoothie Bowls to Try

  • For a little added sweetness, add 1 – 2 tsp agave or honey. The sweetness of your smoothies is totally up to you so add the amount that tastes best to you.
  • If coconut flavor is not your preference, you can use use any flavor Greek Yoghurt as a substitute. Greek Yoghurt is thicker and will hold up in the blender like the coconut solid.
  • In addition or instead of shredded coconut, try topping the smoothie with granola, hemp seeds, chia seeds or chopped pistachios. YUM!
  • Change up the fruit…instead of strawberries try using mangos, cherries, papaya or blueberries. All quite delicious with banana. 🙂
