Whether you’re looking for an appetizer like this cute Turkey Thanksgiving charcuterie board or these fun Chocolate Covered Strawberry Turkeys or easy desserts like these adorable Thanksgiving Oreo Turkey Cookies, the possibilities are endless!

Lots of holiday food options are heavy and less than healthy, so I like to provide lighter options at holiday gatherings too. These turkey fruit skewers are the perfect addition to hold off hungry people ready for their Thanksgiving dinner and add a nice pop of color to your easy Thanksgiving appetizer selection!

Turkey Fruit Platter Ingredients

  • Pear – cut in half
  • Red Grapes – you will need 10 for this recipe (green grapes will work too if that’s what you have)
  • Cantaloupe – one-quarter of the cantaloupe cut into 1-inch cubes, plus one small piece for the nose
  • Strawberries – 4 medium strawberries cut in half
  • Candy Eyeballs – 2 eyeballs
  • Wooden skewers

How to Make Turkey Fruit Skewers

This turkey-shaped fruit platter comes together quickly and easily! Just follow these simple instructions, and you can make several in a few minutes!

  1. Cut the Fruit – Cut the pear in half lengthwise for the body. The cantaloupe pieces should be cut into 1-inch cubes. Slice the strawberries in half from top to bottom. Cut one very small piece of cantaloupe in the shape of a triangle that will be the nose. Basically, you want larger fruit pieces for the skewers to be cut into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Add fruit to wooden skewer – Place the fruit on each of the skewers in the following order, first to last – strawberry, cantaloupe, grape.
  3. Attach fruit skewers to the body of the turkey – Place the half pear in the center of a plate or serving tray. Push the skewers into the top of the pear (a.k.a. the turkey’s head). I prefer to start in the middle and fan out from there like turkey feathers.
  4. Add turkey feet – Cut a toothpick in half and use each half to poke one end into the grapes and the other end into the bottom of the fruit turkey to make feet.
  5. Add the turkey beak – Using half a toothpick, attach the cantaloupe triangle in the center of the pear as the nose.
  6. Add candy eyes – Place the candy eyes above the nose, attaching them with a dab of peanut butter or cream cheese.

Turkey Fruit Skewers Notes And Expert Tips

Your festive gathering just isn’t complete without this adorable turkey fruit tray! Use these tips to make your fruit display just perfect.

  • Use fruit that is firmer and not overly ripe. Firmer fruit will hold on the skewers better.
  • If you are using fruit that will turn brown, such as an apple or banana, you can squirt or mist it with lemon juice to prevent it from turning brown.
  • An apple will work in place of the pear if you don’t have a pear or if they are not your favorite fruit.
  • If you have little people helping, let them create their own turkey and put their favorite fruit on the skewers.

How To Serve Turkey Fruit Skewers

School Party – This adorable treat is perfect for a school party. Healthy snacks for kids are always a win-win.

Family Gathering – These Turkey Fruit Skewers will be the perfect addition to your holiday table. It is a fun dessert or snack for all ages.

Fruit Dip – Serve your tasty turkey with a scrumptious fruit dip. My favorite is one with a cream cheese base.

Variations Of Turkey Fruit Skewers To Try

  • If you do not have candy eyes or don’t like them, chocolate chips will work just as well.
  • Marshmallows are a nice addition to the skewer….and kids love them!
  • Feel free to use any fruit you want! Some of my favorites also include raspberries, apple slices, blueberries, blackberries, orange slices, grapefruit, pineapple chunks, kiwis, and bananas.
  • Cheese pairs well with fruit, so add some cheddar, Colby Jack, or mozzarella cubes to the skewer.

Turkey Fruit Skewers Storage

Refrigerate – Store the assembled turkey skewers in airtight containers or storage bags for 1 – 2 days. Place the pear half in the same container or in a separate bag, as you prefer.

Make ahead – You can absolutely make this skewer platter ahead of time. I do recommend storing it (covered with plastic wrap) in the fridge until you’re ready to serve!

Turkey Fruit Skewers FAQs

Can these Turkey Fruit Skewers be made ahead of time?

Yes, you can! Prep all the fruit and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. You can skewer the fruit ahead of time or just before serving. Assemble the turkey when ready to serve.

What is the best way to adhere the candy eyes to the pear?

There are a couple of good options for this. You can dab just a tiny bit of peanut butter or icing on the bottom of the candy eyes and stick it to the pear. Cream cheese will work just as well, and I like to use the flavored spreadable cream cheese for a little extra sweetness.

What length of skewer works best for this recipe?

For this recipe, I would recommend a skewer that is about 4 – 6 inches long. If you want the feathers to be longer, you can then consider a longer skewer to suit your needs.
