Bacon, Grilled Cheese, Turkey Kabobs (School Lunch Or Party Idea)
Change up the school lunch routine with these kid-approved turkey kabobs! They’re a fun twist on the traditional grilled cheese.
When my son was in the 3rd grade, I go on this kick where I was sending large lunches. He was going through a growth spurt, and I was concerned that he wasn’t getting enough food.
So I began sending things like leftovers from dinner, soup, individual pizzas, etc.
And sometimes I even sent along a fork or spoon (but I often forgot that detail 🤦♀️).
And the things that I was sending kept coming back home.
I was baffled for a while. I asked my kids why they weren’t eating, and they just said they didn’t have time. Or the obvious “you didn’t send a spoon.” 🤦♀️🤦♀️
Then I realized something. School lunchtime is SHORT. Like 20 minutes, max.
And kids are distracted!
So school lunches need to be quick and easy to eat. Finger foods work REALLY well!
And that’s the inspiration behind these bacon, grilled cheese turkey kabobs!
I send them for school lunch, but if your kids love them, you can definitely make them for lunch (or dinner) at home too!
And they work for party food, days at the beach, picnics, and sports tournaments, too!

How To Make Fun Finger Foods
To make these turkey kabobs fun, I used star-shaped cookie cutters to cut the grilled cheese sandwiches into fun-shaped food.
For the skewers, you can use typical bamboo skewers. However, for kids, I prefer to use these not sharp skewers.
And, of course, we have to pack lunches in bento-style containers. They make it easy to include a variety of foods and create homemade “Lunchables” (which my kids obsess over and I refuse to buy).

If you don’t want to do the shape cutters, just cut a single grilled cheese sandwich into 4 squares.
Step 2
Cut each slice of bacon into four pieces.
Step 3
Assemble skewer in this order:
- Grilled cheese sandwich
- 2 small pieces of bacon
- Turkey slice
- Lettuce
- 2 small pieces of bacon
- Grilled cheese sandwich
- Cherry tomato
Step 4
Serve with ranch dip or dressing for dipping.
Note: If using cookie cutters you will probably need 2 sandwiches.
Then just fill the other compartments of your lunch container with delicious sides that your kids love! With a healthy combo like this, almost anything will go with it!
Turkey Kabobs FAQs
Do you have questions? Here are some questions I often see readers ask.
Can lunch skewers be made ahead of time?
Yep! You can assemble kabobs ahead of time for an easy grab-and-go lunch or snack. They’re a perfect recipe to fit into your stress-free morning routine.
Can I make a grilled cheese club sandwich instead of kabobs?
You sure can! Just add the ingredients (use slicing tomatoes instead of cherry) between the two grilled cheese sandwiches and you’re good to go.

Do I have to use turkey?
If your kids aren’t a fan of turkey, you can definitely go with different lunch meat! Try using ham, chicken, roast beef, or just stick with bacon.
How long will these skewers last?
These grilled cheese turkey kabobs will taste best if enjoyed a day or two after making them. After that, they’ll likely get soggy!
I highly recommend assembling these kabobs the night before and storing them in the fridge in an air-tight container. That way, they’ll be delicious at school the next day.
I hope your kids love these turkey kabobs as much as mine have!
