Spring not only brings April showers and May flowers, but it also brings some pretty great excuses for celebrations, including bridal showers, baby showers, Mother’s Day, brunches, and weddings.

I wanted to offer one beautiful go-to dessert idea that could work for all of these occasions. I’ve been into cupcakes lately, and as I was putting together my Charcuterie Bouquet, I had the idea to create a cupcake bouquet.

Similar to my Charcuterie Bouquet, this beautiful bouquet idea is perfect for Easter, Mother’s Day, birthdays, bridal showers, weddings, baby showers, and brunch anytime!

Today, I’m showing you how to create a beautiful cupcake flower bouquet complete with buttercream stems! Making these buttercream flowers is a lot easier than it looks – even if you aren’t a cake decorator, you can do this!

How To Make A Cupcake Bouquet

Isn’t this edible bouquet beautiful? The vibrant pink, red, yellow, and green are perfect for spring and summer.

Cupcake Bouquet Ingredients

Cupcake Flower Bouquet Instructions

Follow these step-by-step instructions to put together this gorgeous cupcake bouquet.

Step 1

First, start by lining piping bags with tips.

Step 2

Split vanilla buttercream into 4 bowls and add gel food coloring to each bowl (1 bowl yellow, 1 bowl green, and 2 bowls pink)

Step 3

Fully blend the colors. Once the icing in two of the bowls has turned fully pink, take one of the pink bowls and add 2 drops of red-red food gel color to turn it red.

NOTE: Do not try to use red without turning pink first. Red + white=pink, not red.

Step 4

Add frosting to piping bags, making sure green goes into a 1M bag, and set it aside.

Step 5 – Add The Cupcakes To The Board

Line the cupcakes on the board, starting at the top by making an arrow shape.

Next, add a second row of cupcakes beneath it.

Now add the last row of cupcakes.

Step 6 – Decorate The Bouquet Of Cupcakes

Using the piping bags, decide where you want the various colors to be.

Squeeze a star in the center of the cupcake and then slightly hover above the cupcake.

Use continuous pressure to pipe a tight circle around the star and allow the icing to fall in place.

When you reach the end stop squeezing and then pull off.

Step 7

Repeat for every color.

Use the green icing to pipe thick stems directly onto the board.

Cupcake Bouquet Recipe Notes And Tips

  • Only buttercream frosting will work with this recipe. You can buy buttercream frosting, or feel free to make your own with the recipe below
  • If your cupcakes slide around, add a dab of frosting to the bottom of each one to “glue” them to the board.
  • If you make homemade buttercream for your cupcake bouquet and it’s too runny, add more powdered sugar. On the other hand, if you try to squeeze out the buttercream from a piping bag and it makes your hands hurt, it’s too stiff. In that case, return the buttercream to the bowl and add just a little liquid to make it easier to pipe.
  • I don’t recommend using a buttercream that has fruit or anything else in it because it will likely clog the piping tip and cause it to explode. Yikes!
  • You can use this same process for any number of cupcakes in your cupcake bouquet – feel free to play around with making different sizes of cupcake bouquets!
  • Get creative with which colors you use! Feel free to use other colors that mimic flowers or change the colors to match a party event.
  • Using gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring is better in the frosting because it holds color better in fatty foods.

Homemade Buttercream Recipe

If you want to make your own buttercream, use this recipe.

  • 1.5 cups unsalted butter – softened to room temperature
  • 6 cups powdered sugar – also called confectioner’s sugar
  • 3-4 Tbsp heavy cream – milk works too but the frosting won’t be as creamy
  • 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • dash of salt
  • food coloring

Buttercream Instructions

  • Beat the butter with a mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes until it’s creamy. Add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract and mix on low until it begins to come together. Then increase to high speed for 3 full minutes.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add another Tbsp of heavy cream.
  • Add a dash of salt if the frosting is too sweet.

Experimenting With Cupcake Flavors

For this cupcake bouquet recipe, you first need baked cupcakes. You can make homemade cupcakes, use a cake mix, or buy already make cupcakes.

For this recipe, I stuck with basic vanilla cupcakes, but you could add different flavored extracts to your cupcakes if you want to change things up. Lemon or orange-flavored cupcakes would be amazing!

Cupcake bouquets are way easier to make than they look. And a cupcake bouquet makes a wonderful addition to any baby or bridal shower, brunch, Mother’s Day, or any event! Well, that’s assuming everyone loves cupcakes… and flowers… and yummy buttercream. 😉
