Blackberry Lemon Dump Cake Recipe Notes And Tips

  • Evenly distribute the butter slices (or shaved, cold butter) on top of the oatmeal. This will ensure that the butter goodness melts over every delectable inch of the cake and moistens the oats and cake mix.
  • If you use frozen blackberries or other fruit, I recommend shaking the fruit in a bit of cornstarch before adding it to the dish. This will help the fruit from sinking to the bottom of the dough or batter.
  • My preference when making the Blackberry Lemon Dump Cake is to use a glass baking dish, but I also like to make this dish in a large cast iron skillet. Works beautifully!
  • Put the butter stick in the freezer before you shave it. Trust me, it will make it much easier and quicker to put on the top of the dump cake.

Variations To Try

  • There are so many flavor variations of this tasty treat that you can try. Here are a few other suggestions for you to whip up:
    • Strawberry dump cake – combine strawberries with white or yellow cake mix
    • Blueberry lemon dump cake – combine blueberries with lemon or white cake mix
    • Cherry dump cake – combine cherries with chocolate or vanilla cake mix
  • Sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts for a yummy earthy, flavor!
  • Add some brown sugar on the top before baking. You will love the little extra sweetness, caramel flavor, and crunch.
  • Add a little lemon zest on top of the cake mix for a little added zest!
  • Lemon lovers will appreciate adding lemon pie filling. I recommend folding the berries into the filling before adding it to the pan.

Make It Gluten-Free

To make this recipe gluten-free, just use a gluten-free cake mix and check that your rolled oats are gluten-free.

SAFETY NOTE: Oats are naturally gluten-free, but are often packaged in a facility that processes items with wheat, barley, or rye – the cross-contamination makes them not safe for people who need to eat gluten-free.

Blackberry Lemon Dump Cake Storage

How long will the Blackberry Lemon Dump Cake leftovers stay fresh?

If you have any leftover lemon dump cake, you can refrigerate it in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Can I make this Blackberry Lemon Dump Cake ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare it up to 2 – 3 days in advance. Keep it in the fridge until ready to serve. I recommend making it as close to the time that you wish to serve it – or the day before.

Can I freeze this dump cake?

I have never done that with this specific recipe, but I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t freeze it. To thaw, let it sit out on the counter at room temperature for several hours or overnight.

To serve, I recommend putting it in the oven at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes to heat it all the way through and make sure it’s not soggy from being frozen.
