Supplies Needed For This Butterfly Suncatcher Craft

  • Tissue Paper –  I prefer yellow, pink, red, and blue to make this craft, but you could definitely use any colors of tissue paper you prefer.
  • Tape/Contact Paper – contact paper is easy to use, especially when crafting with younger children
  • Scissor – If you are crafting with younger children, consider cutting out the pieces yourself (for toddlers) or letting preschoolers use safety scissors.
  • Construction Paper – or cardstock, I prefer black for the outline of the butterfly, but you can choose any color you prefer
  • Free Template

How To Make A Butterfly Suncatcher Craft

  1. Template – Download and print the butterfly template, then carefully cut it out.
  2. Cut out template – Put the butterfly template on top of a piece of black construction paper or cardstock and trace the inside and outside of the outline. Then use scissors to cut out the traced butterfly.
  3. Cut tissue paper squares – Begin cutting tissue paper squares about 1 inch in size from the different-colored tissue paper.
  4. Secure the template and add tissue paper – Place the butterfly template onto the contact paper. Then place the tissue paper squares on the contact paper until the open spaces of the butterfly wings are covered with tissue paper.
  5. Cut excess contact paper – Use scissors to cut the excess contact paper from around the edges of the butterfly.

Butterfly Suncatcher Craft Notes And Expert Tips

  • If you are crafting with very young kids who can’t use scissors yet, let them tear the pieces of tissue paper instead of cutting them.
  • To keep the contact paper from peeling off the butterfly, run a thin line of craft glue along the inside edges of your black butterfly frame before pressing the two sticky sides together.
  • Let kids pick their own colors. When children choose their own supplies, they are more invested in the process and prouder of the result. Even if they choose one color of tissue paper for the whole project, let them enjoy the crafting experience.

How To Display A Butterfly Suncatcher Craft

Tape your beautiful Butterfly Suncatcher Craft to the window or screen door for your neighbors, delivery people, mailman, and friends to enjoy.

Add a loop with string or yarn to the back of the suncatcher and hang it on a doorknob or a hook in the ceiling.

Variations Of Butterfly Suncatcher Craft To Try

If you want to use contact paper for these beautiful suncatchers but don’t have any, use Press ‘n Seal – it works basically the same as contact paper because it has a sticky side too that will hold all of the tissue paper squares in place!

Change up the colors to suit your taste. Use varied shades of just one color, such as yellows, reds, or blues. Be as creative as YOU wish!!!

Cut or tear the tissue paper into strips about 1 inch wide instead of the small squares for a different, unique look.

Add a little glitter…..because who doesn’t love glitter! The clear, sparkly white glitter would be gorgeous on the butterfly.

Butterfly Suncatcher Craft FAQs

Should the tissue paper pieces overlap?

YES! The overlapping pieces of tissue paper will make sure all the empty spaces are covered and create a blending of the colors when you look at the front of the butterfly.

What can I put on the back of the butterfly to protect the tissue paper?

You can place a second piece of contact paper on the back side of the butterfly suncatcher craft so that the tissue paper squares will remain in place. Be sure to trim the excess contact paper around the edges of the butterfly as well.
