Every year, my kids are bummed to say goodbye to summer. But I’ve found that doing some adorable apple crafts and apple activities is a great way to get them excited about the fall season!

This simple apple suncatcher craft is fun for young kids and older kids too!

You’ll love this great craft for several reasons including:

  • It’s great for improving fine motor skills and cutting skills
  • Spurs conversation about the different colors of apples
  • It’s easy to adapt for other fruits and vegetables – think acorns, pumpkins, and more!
  • The final product is a fun to display around the house

This is a terrific craft to pair with some cute apple-themed cupcakes for back to school!

If you love serving a fun snack with your craft (like we do), we have lots of fun apple recipes that would be perfect. Try these:

And once you’re done making this apple craft, you can start making pumpkin crafts. Whether you’re team apple or team pumpkin this time of year, there’s tons of inspiration and lots of fun options!

Materials Needed

You just need a few basic supplies to make an easy craft that will add a fun pop of color to your seasonal decorations!

  • Construction paper – You’ll definitely want red, green, and brown, and maybe yellow and green paper too.
  • Tissue paper – Use all sorts of colors for this. You can keep it strictly apple colors (red tissue paper, green tissue paper, yellow tissue paper), or get more colorful like we did!
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Tape

How To Make This Apple Suncatcher

  1. Make the apple outline – Cut the templates, trace on red paper, then cut again. Trace around the outside edges of the apple outline with a marker.
  2. Add the stem and leaf – Attach the stem and leaf at the top of the apple.
  3. Cut squares of tissue paper – Use tissue paper in whatever colors you want! The more squares you make, the better your apple will look. You want enough tissue paper pieces to fill the open space in the center of the apple outline.
  4. Attach tissue paper squares – Put tape on the back of the apple and attach the tissue paper squares.

Alternative Apple Suncatcher Method: Use Contact Paper Instead Of Tape

We didn’t have any contact paper when we made our apple suncatcher, so we had to pivot and use tape instead. It worked really well, but I actually prefer using clear contact paper (like we did with one of our other window crafts – our nature mandala craft).

If you want to use contact paper, be aware that you’ll need two pieces of contact paper. Here’s how to use contact paper instead of tape:

  • Start by layering the apple outline on top of a sheet of contact paper – Lay one piece of contact paper piece on a table with the sticky side up. Carefully place your apple shape onto the sticky side.
  • Add tissue paper squares – Cut the tissue paper into small pieces and press them onto the contact paper in a jumble inside of the apple outline. It looks the best when pieces overlap each other!
  • Add second piece of contact paper on top – When you finish adding the tissue paper squares, lay the 2nd piece of contact paper (sticky side down) on top of the craft to “seal” it and hold everything together!
  • Cut out the shape – Finish everything off by trimming around the edge of the apple suncatcher.

Suncatcher Apple Expert Notes and Tips

  • If you’re doing this with very young kids who can’t use scissors yet, have them tear pieces of tissue paper instead of cutting them out.
  • Young kids may need help with the drawing and cutting. You can prep the outline pieces if you want to!
  • Feel free to use different shades of reds, greens, and yellows if you want strictly apple colors. Or get creative and add in additional colors for a beautiful alternative!

Free Apple Template

Feel free to simply draw your own apple shape for this craft if you want. However, if you aren’t confident with your drawing skills, you could also use our free apple template to help you make that perfect outline for your apple suncatcher.

Variations To Try

  • Tissue Paper vs. Colored Cellophane – Either one works! I love working with tissue paper, but colored cellophane has vibrant colors and looks incredible in the window!
  • Try different shapes for fall! Turn your apples into acorns, pumpkins, or other gourds!
