Supplies Needed

You only need a few basic craft supplies to make this fun kite craft with craft sticks.

How to Make a Kite Craft with Popsicle Sticks

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to make this kite popsicle stick craft.

Step 1 – Make the Kite Frame

Put a drop of glue on each end of the 4 craft sticks and press together in the diamond shape of a kite to form the kite frame.

Step 2 – Measure and Cut the Kite Material

Use the frame to measure the kite material, cut to size and glue face down to one side of the frame, turn over to view the front of the kite.

Step 3 – Make Streamers and Attach Them

Cut two pieces of streamer approximately 16 inches long, then cut both in half vertically to form four streamers to use as your kite string.

Glue the four streamers together at one end and attach to the bottom of the kite from the back side.

Step 4 – Make the Pipe Cleaner Hanger

For the finger loop, cut the pipe cleaner in half and glue one piece to the top of the kite from the back side as shown.

Your paper kite craft is now ready to “fly”!

Pro Tips and Variations to Try

Customize the look – tie-dye not your thing? You can easily customize these popsicle stick crafts for kids by changing the pattern paper that you use! Use different colors, patterns, or textures!

Use the glue you have – I think hot glue is the best type of adhesive to use for this craft, because it dries quickly. But if you don’t have hot glue, you can use any type of glue you do have – just plan for a longer dry time.

Change your frame style – I personally like the picture frame style we used in this craft. However, you could make a cross with your popsicle sticks and use that to form your kite shape.

Replace the popsicle sticks with paper straws – If you don’t have popsicle sticks, you can do the exact same thing with paper straws or plastic straws.

Have fun with kite string materials – If you don’t have streamers, you can try using pieces of string, decorative ribbons, or anything else you can think of!

    1. Hi Amanda! So the tie dye is the “kite material” listed in the supplies list. It’s whatever material you want to use…paper, table cloth, gift wrap…whatever! I used a tie dye-colored paper because I’m a sucker for tie dye! You could even use tie dye fabric if you have some already made 🙂
