Just print out the Easter scavenger hunt riddles and hide them around the house to try this fun Easter scavenger hunt idea. Let the hunt begin!Â

When my kids were really little, we did simple Easter egg hunts – you know, the open-ended free-for-all that many people do.
That was great for a couple of years, but then we started running into problems. One kid would find more than the others. Or we (ok, I) would forget how many Easter eggs were hidden and we wouldn’t find them all but wouldn’t realize it.
Those kinds of things.
But then a few years ago, I decided to change things up and try doing an Easter scavenger hunt INSTEAD of a traditional Easter egg hunt.
And wow, did that open up all kinds of new possibilities I never thought of before!
If you’ve never done scavenger hunts before, they’re basically treasure hunts with helpful clues in different locations guiding the hunter to the next step, and the next step until they find treasure after finding where the final clue leads them.
It’s a super fun activity and the perfect way to lead kids to Easter eggs, Easter baskets, or any other Easter surprise of your choosing!
Why Use an Easter Scavenger Hunt
- Scavenger hunts create more engagement than traditional egg hunts because they challenge children to solve riddles and think critically while remaining motivated by the promise of discovering what comes next.
- Easter scavenger hunts solve common problems with traditional egg hunts by ensuring equal participation among children and preventing lost eggs through a clue-based system.
How Do Scavenger Hunts Work?
It depends on how you want to do it. There are two basic ways to run a scavenger hunt:
- seek and find a checklist of items
- lead kids from one place to another, usually collecting a new clue and/or an item at each location.
I’ve tried them both ways and usually vary it up each year to keep the kids guessing 😉
Ideas For How To Use This Easter Scavenger Hunt
This year, I decided to create a printable scavenger hunt to share with you! I think the best Easter egg scavenger hunts are ones that challenge kids (what fun is there in just running to eggs?). So this type of scavenger hunt is full of cute cards, rhymes, and fun clues to make the kids think and solve riddles – while being very motivated to get to the next step in the journey.
Here are ideas for ways to use these Easter scavenger hunt clues:
- use the clues as a treasure hunt to lead your kids to the treasure at the end (their Easter basket is a GREAT final prize, but you could use others too).
- hide each clue in a plastic Easter egg at each location (or leave the clue out and fill the egg with a surprise inside).
- give them an empty Easter basket and have them fill it up with things they find on their hunt.
- create a final prize that you can bring together in pieces and leave a piece at each clue location along with another clue.

Set-Up Your Easter Scavenger Hunt
You can grab these clues now and prepare them ahead of time to make your Easter festivities all fun and no stress!
- Grab the free printable clues (grab them here) and print them out. NOTE: I like to print them on card stock, but regular printer paper will work too!
- Hide the 2nd clue according to the details on the 1st clue.
- Hide all of the clue cards based on the previous clue hints until you are left with the last one (the order of the cards doesn’t matter).
- Want to make the scavenger hunt longer? Add extra cards of your own before the last clue OR take the hunt outside with this set of 16 outdoor cards!
- Ready to start the hunt? Just hand the first clue to your kids and let them start hunting for the next clue while you watch them have so much fun!
How To Use These Cards With Multiple Kids
I recommend trying these different ways and ideas:
- Use different colors of plastic Easter eggs (or printer paper) and assign each child their own specific color. They can ONLY pick the clues that are THEIR color!
- Mix up the order of the clues – I found this helpful with doing this with my kids so they didn’t just follow each other from clue to clue, ha!
- Instruct your kids to ONLY pick up plastic Easter eggs in their own color and leave the rest alone.
- Sit back and have fun watching them race to be the first one to find their prize!
PRO TIP: If there is a card that doesn’t apply to you, just remove it from the set. I tried to keep the locations as broad as possible so they would fit any home.
Finishing the Easter treasure hunt – Prizes
You can do prizes any way you want! Here are some ideas:
Place a grand prize at the end. For example, I put their Easter basket from the Easter bunny at the end of the hunt so they were actually working to get to their basket of Easter treats.
If you want to do something on a smaller scale, you could have large plastic eggs as the prize and fill them with small prizes such as treats, trinkets, or even money (for older kids).

How To Make This Indoor Easter Scavenger Hunt Harder
If you have older children and want to use these clues to make the Easter egg hunt fun harder for them, you can make the hiding spots a little trickier.
For example, instead of placing the clue or prize on the washing machine, you can place it inside the machine or behind or beside the machine. But for little kids, you can place it in front of the machine.
Another idea is to expand the activity. Instead of only doing indoor clues, add these outdoor egg hunt clues and run the kids around between locations (indoors and the great outdoors)!
The whole family will have fun with this silly Easter scavenger hunt, and it’s guaranteed to add some joy and excitement to your Easter morning! My family absolutely loved it!
Easter Scavenger Hunt FAQs
Absolutely! Simply hide the clues in different locations or reverse the order so kids don’t remember the pattern from the previous year. You can also laminate the cards for durability and store them in a labeled envelope with notes about which locations you used, making it easier to vary the hiding spots annually.
Pair younger children with older siblings as “hunting teams” or modify the difficulty by using picture clues for non-readers and riddle-based clues for stronger readers. Another option is to have the younger child responsible for finding the physical hiding spot while the older child reads the clue aloud, giving each child an important role.
Create individual hunts using color-coded clues (or color-coded eggs) where each child only collects their assigned color, or implement a “team hunt” where siblings must work together to solve each clue before proceeding. You can also build in mandatory pause points where all children must reach the same checkpoint before anyone continues to the next clue.
Early morning right after kids wake up creates maximum excitement and gives them an active outlet for their energy before holiday meals. Alternatively, schedule the hunt for mid-afternoon as a break between Easter activities, which helps prevent the post-lunch energy crash and keeps kids engaged throughout the day.
Scavenger hunts transform passive egg collecting into active problem-solving because children must read riddles, think critically about locations, and stay mentally engaged throughout the entire activity rather than just grabbing eggs as fast as possible. Happy Hunting!
