How the Moving Eyes Work
Wondering how to make your mummy’s eyes move without batteries, magnets, or any fancy supplies? You’re going to love how ridiculously simple this little trick is!
The secret is in three easy layers that work together to bring your mummy to life. The bottom layer is a piece of white paper with eyes drawn on it, while the middle layer is cardboard with a circle cut out of the center. The top layer is your adorable mummy head, which is glued to the cardboard but NOT to the white paper underneath (that’s the important part!).
Here’s where the magic happens! When you slide your fingers behind the white paper, you can move it back and forth while the mummy’s head stays perfectly still. As the eyes shift behind the mummy’s face, it looks like your silly little mummy is looking around and watching everything you do!
Seriously, how clever is that?! It’s such a simple idea, but the finished effect is absolutely adorable. And trust me, kids will LOVE making their mummy’s eyes move and showing off their spooky little creation to everyone!
How to Make A Mummy Craft
- Template – Trace and cut out the template. Trace and cut again on construction paper. Assemble to make the mummy as shown in the picture.
- Create the Details – Use the black marker to draw lines on the mummy and create some fun details.
- Assemble – Assemble the mummy pieces and attach the mouth.
- Moving Eyes – Using the white construction paper, cut a small square to use for the eyes. Use the black marker to draw the eyes on the square.
- Cut Cardboard – Cut another square out of the cardboard. It needs to be a bit bigger than the square cut from the construction paper. Next, cut a circle in the center of the cardboard square.
- Moving Eyes – Place your hand in the circle to make the white paper/eyes move.
- Attach – Place the white paper on the cardboard square, but do not attach it with glue. Attach the mummy to the top of the white paper. Now glue it to the cardboard and back of the mummy so the white paper can move.
- Test – Place your fingers on the back and move the black construction paper with the eyes.
- Add Final Touches – take a long strip of the white crepe paper and wrap it around your mummy head to give it that mummy look.

Mummy Craft Notes And Expert Tips
Keep the white paper loose. The white paper part of the eye should move freely with no resistance. Be careful not to accidentally glue the white paper to another part of the project.
Size the spaces for the eyes correctly. If the cardboard rectangle is too small, the eyes will not move much. Too large, the effect looks strange. Be sure the rectangle shows both eyes with a little room around them.
Test movement before final assembly. Hold the layers together without glue and move the white paper around. If the movement looks good, glue them together. If not, adjust the window size or eye placement first.

Mummy Craft Variations To Try
Use white tissue paper for the mummy wraps, letting kids tear and glue the strips to create their own one-of-a-kind mummy.
Let your kids pick their favorite color for the background to make it their own! Don’t forget to add a little color to the mummy faces for some extra fun and personality.
For a bit of extra fun, have the kids paint a paper plate black. Once dry, they can create the mummy wrappings by either gluing on white paper strips or letting them paint the mummy wrappings with white paint.
Mummy Craft FAQs
Great question! If you are having young crafters make this vampire craft, you will want them to have appropriate scissors to use. Allow them to use the kids’ scissors to cut the construction paper pieces.
Yes, but you must press firmly. To get a good hold, apply a generous layer of the glue stick directly onto the cardboard, press firmly, and smooth it down with your hands for 10–15 seconds to ensure it holds.
You can use torn or cut white printer paper, crepe paper, toilet paper strips, white paper towels, or masking tape.
