Are you planning a camping trip and don’t know where to start? Camping can be a fun and exciting adventure, but it’s important to make sure you have all the necessary equipment to make your trip comfortable and safe. Since many families start their camping journeys with car camping, I’m sharing all my car camping essentials to make your trip a success for the whole family.

For most families, camping is an exciting and adventurous activity to do together each summer. Many families choose to go car camping (or “glamping”) instead of backpacking to teach kids how to camp and appreciate the wonders of nature.

If you’re not an experienced camper, you’ll notice that camping is different from taking a family road trip or hitting the beach.

But, like both of those other destinations, the success of your camping trip depends on having the right gear! As Boy Scouts say, “Be Prepared.” Trust me, it will make a HUGE difference in your overall experience.

I thought it might be helpful to create an essential camping gear list to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy making memories together!

Essential car camping checklist

Here’s a checklist of camping essentials to help you pack so you have the best car camping trips!

Shelter and sleeping car camping essentials

When it comes to camping, your shelter and sleeping equipment are some of the most important things to consider. Without a good night’s sleep and a safe place to rest, your camping trip can quickly turn into a nightmare. Let’s take a look at some of the key components of your shelter and sleeping setup.

Tent

First things first, you need a tent. Your tent is your home away from home while camping, so you want to make sure you choose a high-quality shelter. Consider the size, weight, and durability of the tent.

Make sure you choose a tent that’s big enough to accommodate everyone (we tend to go a LITTLE roomy (ex: a 6-person tent for 5 people) to give us room to move for a good night sleep, but that’s totally up to you). You also want to make sure it has good ventilation and a sturdy rainfly to keep you dry during rainy weather.

Don’t forget to bring a footprint and tent stakes to secure your tent properly.

Here are some of the BEST camping tents to narrow down the choices for you because if you enjoy camping, your family is sure to get a lot of use out of it!

Sleeping bag

A good sleeping bag is essential for a good night’s sleep. Make sure you choose a sleeping bag that’s appropriate for the weather conditions you’ll be facing. For example, you’ll want a good quality 3-season sleeping bag so that you and your kids stay warm enough all night long.

Sleeping pads

Sleeping pads provide insulation and cushioning between you and the hard, cold ground (bye, bye, rocks!) so that you can actually, well, sleep! Some people bring an air mattress for the ultimate comfort, but I have found an inflatable sleeping pad to be enough for each member of our family.

There are many different types to choose from. They come in a variety of materials, including foam, air, and self-inflating. Consider the size, weight, and insulation of the sleeping pad when making your selection.

Here are some great choices:

Pillows

While you can certainly make do with a rolled-up jacket or a stuff sack filled with clothes, a good camping pillow can make all the difference in your comfort (and quality of sleep).

Look for a pillow that is lightweight, compact, and comfortable.

Forget about those old hot and flat pillows that didn’t offer any support! Here are some of my favs:

Tarps and rainflies

Even if your tent has a rainfly, it’s always a good idea to bring along an extra tarp or rainfly to provide additional protection from the elements.

A tarp is a good idea to put under your tent to help prevent rain from the ground making you miserable. Also, make sure the tarp is large enough to cover your tent and any gear you have stored outside.

Clothing car camping essentials

When it comes to camping, having the right clothing can make or break your trip. You want to be comfortable, but also prepared for any weather conditions (check the weather forecast!) that may come your way.

Here are some key items to consider packing on your next camping trip:

Base layers

Your base layers are the foundation of your camping outfit. They should be moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and comfortable. Look for materials like merino wool or synthetic blends. Avoid cotton, as it holds onto moisture and can leave you feeling damp and chilly.

Socks and underwear

Don’t underestimate the importance of good socks and underwear. Your feet and nether regions deserve some love too! Look for socks that are cushioned and breathable, and bring extra pairs in case they get wet. For underwear, opt for moisture-wicking materials and consider packing a few extra pairs.

Rain gear

You never know when a sudden rainstorm will hit, so it’s important to be prepared. A waterproof jacket and pants are essential, as well as a rain cover for your backpack. Look for gear that is lightweight and packable, so it doesn’t take up too much space in your pack.

Remember, layering is key when it comes to camping clothing. You want to be able to adjust your outfit as the temperature changes throughout the day. Bring a mix of short and long-sleeved shirts, as well as a warm fleece or down jacket for chilly nights. And don’t forget a hat and gloves for extra warmth!

Cooking and food essential camping gear

Cooking outdoors can be a lot of fun, but it can also be challenging if you don’t have the right equipment. Have these items on hand to make sure your meals are a success.

Cooler

A high-quality cooler is essential to keep your food and drinks cold. And, of course, you’ll need plenty of ice for your cooler.

We’ve tried just about every cooler under the sun, and I swear by YETI coolers because they are the ONLY coolers we’ve found that are up to the task of keeping food and drinks COLD for a camping trip! Yes, they’re an investment (there are different models and sizes), but they last FOREVER!

Learn how to store food while camping so critters (including bears) don’t come take it from you – even car campers need to know this!

Stove

A camping stove is a must-have if you want to cook hot meals while camping (and fuel for your daytime excursions)!

There are many different types of camping stoves available, from small, single-burner stoves to larger, multi-burner stoves. Choose one that fits your needs and budget. Make sure to bring enough fuel for your stove, too.

You’ll also need some camping cookware, such as pots, pans, and utensils. Look for lightweight, durable options that are easy to clean. Cast iron is a popular choice for camping cookware, as it can be used on a camp stove or over a campfire. Don’t forget to bring a spatula, tongs, and a can opener, too.

Plates and utensil car camping essentials

You’ll need something to eat off of and with, so make sure to bring plates, bowls, cups, and eating utensils. Look for options that are lightweight and durable, such as plastic or enamelware. Don’t forget to bring a sharp knife and a cutting board, too.

Food

When it comes to camping food, keep it simple. Plan meals that are easy to prepare and don’t require a lot of ingredients. Some good options include hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta, and canned soups.

Don’t forget to bring snacks, too, such as trail mix, granola bars, and fresh fruit.

Here are some delicious ideas:

S’mores supplies

Whether you prefer traditional s’mores or these delicious Easy S’mores Bars, no camping trip is complete without s’mores! Make sure to bring graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows. You’ll also need roasting sticks or forks to cook the marshmallows over the campfire.

Drinking water

You’ll need plenty of drinking water while camping, so make sure to bring enough for your entire trip. I highly recommend bringing/using an insulated stainless steel water bottle for each person to keep your drinks cold (and easy to carry).

You might also want to bring a water filter or purification tablets, just in case you need to refill your water supply from a natural source.

And don’t forget to bring biodegradable soap so you can wash your dishes and utensils after meals.

Camping coffee maker or French Press

If you’re a coffee drinker, don’t forget to bring a camping coffee maker or French press. There’s nothing like a hot cup of coffee in the morning to start your day off right.

Lighting and fire car camping essentials

When you’re out camping, lighting and fire are essential. You’ll need to be able to see in the dark, and you’ll need to be able to cook your food and keep warm. Here are some tips to help you make sure you’re prepared.

Firewood and firestarter

You’ll need something to start your fire with, and you’ll need something to burn. You can’t always rely on finding dry wood lying around, so it’s a good idea to bring some with you. Here are some options:

  • Firestarter: You can buy firestarter logs or sticks that will help you get your fire going. Or make your own DIY fire starters!
  • Matches or Lighter: Bring matches or a lighter to light your firestarter. Make sure they’re waterproof matches, or keep them in a waterproof container.
  • Propane: If you’re using a camp stove, you’ll need propane. Make sure you bring enough for your whole trip.
  • Campfire: If you’re building a campfire, you’ll need to gather firewood. Look for dry wood that’s not too thick. Don’t cut down live trees or branches.

When it gets dark, you’ll need to be able to see. Here are some options:

  • Flashlights: Flashlights are great because they’re small and easy to carry around. Make sure you bring extra batteries.
  • Headlamp: Headlamps are even better because they keep your hands free. You can wear them while you’re cooking or doing other tasks around camp.
  • Lanterns: Lanterns are nice because they provide ambient light. You can hang them from a tree or set them on a table. Make sure you bring extra fuel or batteries.

Personal care and hygiene camping essentials

When you’re out in the wilderness, it’s easy to let personal hygiene slip. But with a little bit of planning and preparation, you can stay clean and fresh no matter how long you’re camping for.

Camp shower bag

A shower bag is an essential item for any camping trip so you can clean up.

or, if you’re staying in a facility that has a shower facility, a shower caddy allows you to store all of your toiletries in one convenient place. Make sure to pack the following items in your shower bag:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash or soap
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Razor and shaving cream (if needed)
  • Feminine hygiene products (if needed)

Shower wipes

If you don’t have access to shower facilities, or just don’t feel like taking a full shower, shower wipes are a great alternative. They’re easy to use and can help you feel clean and refreshed in just a few minutes. Plus, they’re biodegradable, so you don’t have to worry about leaving any trace behind.

Quick-drying towel

A quick-drying towel is a must-have for any camping trip. It’s lightweight, compact, and dries quickly, making it easy to pack and transport. Plus, it’s perfect for drying off after a shower or swim, or for wiping away sweat on a hot day.

First-aid kits – car camping essential for injuries, stings, and bites

Accidents can happen anywhere, so it’s important to have a well-stocked first aid kit on hand. Make sure your kit includes the following items:

  • Band-aids in various sizes
  • Gauze pads
  • Adhesive tape
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Pain relievers
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Ice packs

When it comes to camping, there are always a few miscellaneous items that you’ll want to bring along to make your trip more comfortable and enjoyable. Here are some must-have items to consider:

Lightweight backpack

You’ll want a lightweight backpack to carry all of your essentials while you’re out exploring. Look for one with plenty of compartments and a comfortable fit.

Pocket multi-tool

A pocket multi-tool is a must-have for any camping trip. It can be used for everything from opening cans to fixing gear. Look for one with a variety of tools, including a knife, pliers, and screwdrivers.

Lightweight table

A lightweight table is a great addition to any campsite. It provides a place to prepare food, play games, or just relax. Look for one that is easy to set up and pack away.

I always get cold after the sun goes down. An outdoor blanket is a great addition to any camping trip. It provides a comfortable place to sit and relax while enjoying the great outdoors.

Mosquito repellant (my #1 car camping essential!)

I HATE being a mosquito buffet (and trust me – they LOVE me). Mosquito repellant is a must-have for any camping trip. Look for one that is effective and easy to apply.

Clear plastic bin

A clear plastic bin is a great way to keep your gear organized.

Duct tape

Whether it’s a rip in your tarp or a hole in your shoe, duct tape is a magic bandaid to hold it together until you can repair it (or go home)!

Portable power station

Although enjoying a break from your electronic devices is a benefit of the car camping experience, you may want to have a power supply for your cell phone or Kindle, etc.

Toilet paper and shovel

Speaking as a girl (ha!), one of the most important car camping essentials is toilet paper! And everyone needs to bring a shovel to bury it when someone goes #2.

Just make sure to bring at least one roll of toilet paper at the bare minimum.

Trash bags or trash receptacles – car camping essential for off the beaten path

Trash bags or trash receptacles are a must-have for any camping trip. They provide a place to dispose of trash and keep your campsite clean.

That said, I will bring this if I’m going somewhere that’s more remote. However, if we’re camping in a more popular site that likely has trash cans, I prefer to use those because they’re bear-proof.

Best car camping essentials for fun

Make sure to bring some games to play in case you have a rainy afternoon and can’t get outside to do what you had planned. Whether you’re hanging out in the tent in your camping spot or out enjoying day hikes, you’ll get that much-needed break from life and routine that you crave! 

Some of our favorites to bring are books/Kindles and deck of cards for card games.

So, you’re planning a camping trip with your little one? Well, get ready for some serious cuteness overload! But before you head out into the wilderness, you’ll need to make sure you have all the essential gear to keep your baby safe, comfortable, and entertained.

A pack n’ play is a great option for keeping your baby safe and contained while you’re camping. Look for a pack n’ play that’s lightweight, easy to set up, and has a built-in sunshade to protect your baby from the sun.

Pacifiers and pacifier clip

Pacifiers can be a lifesaver when it comes to soothing a fussy baby. Make sure you pack plenty of pacifiers and a pacifier clip to keep them from getting lost.

Extra clothes

Car camping essentials for dogs

Camping with your furry friend can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it’s important to make sure you have all the essentials to keep them safe and happy. Here are some must-have items to pack when camping with dogs:

Sturdy leash and stake

You don’t want your dog wandering off into the wilderness, so make sure you bring a sturdy leash and stake to keep them secure at your campsite. A 20-foot cable leash and stake is a good option for giving your pup some room to roam while still keeping them under control.

Collapsible dog bowls

When it comes to feeding your dog on a camping trip, collapsible dog bowls are a must-have. They take up minimal space in your pack and can be easily stored when not in use. Plus, they’re perfect for stashing in a daypack for hikes or other outdoor activities.

Make sure you bring enough dog food and treats for the duration of your trip, plus a little extra in case of emergencies. Store them in a sealed container that wild animals can’t access to keep your pup safe.

Must-have car camping essentials for packing

If you’re taking the entire family on a camping trip, you may need additional storage than what your vehicle provides. I recommend plastic tubs (clear if possible) to make organizing all your essentials a breeze.

In addition, we have found roof racks to be incredibly helpful for offering extra room and storage when we run out of room inside the car for longer trips.

NOTE: Although there are soft, bag-like options, I highly hard cover options like this Thule to keep critters out if you keep food inside!
