Sweet Jalapeño Cornbread
Move over, plain cornbread—there’s a new favorite in town, and it’s bringing the HEAT (and the sweet)! This Sweet Jalapeño Cornbread is everything you love about homemade cornbread—perfectly moist, fluffy, buttery, and golden around the edges—but with an irresistible sweet-and-spicy twist that will have everyone fighting over the last piece!

I love eating fresh, hot cornbread. I’ve tried several varieties of cornbread, but my favorite is sweet jalapeño cornbread. The combination of rich brown sugar, tangy buttermilk, and fresh jalapeños creates an incredible balance of flavors that’s just the right amount of sweet with a little kick of heat.
Whether you’re pairing it with a cozy bowl of chili, serving it alongside smoky BBQ, or sneaking a warm slice straight from the pan (no judgment here!), this easy homemade jalapeño cornbread recipe is guaranteed to steal the show.
And if spicy food isn’t your thing (like me!), don’t worry! You can easily dial down the heat by removing the jalapeño seeds and membranes. One bite, and you’ll wonder why you ever settled for ordinary cornbread!

How to Make Sweet Jalapeno Cornbread
- Prepare Pan – Preheat the oven, then lightly coat an 8″ cake pan or cast-iron pan with oil or butter. Set to the side.
- Combine Dry Ingredients – Add cornmeal, flour, brown sugar, and white sugar to a large mixing bowl. Whisk the dry ingredients together.
- Sift – Sift the baking powder into the mixing bowl with the dry ingredients. Add salt and whisk to fully incorporate the baking powder and salt.
- Add Wet Ingredients – In the dry ingredients, create a well in the center of the mixture. Add melted butter, buttermilk, and eggs to the well.
- Stir Thoroughly – Stir and mix starting in the center of the well. Mix the wet ingredients into the center, slowly moving outward to incorporate all the dry ingredients.
- Jalapenos – Add in the chopped jalapenos. Keep stirring the batter until the jalapenos are thoroughly mixed and steaks of dry ingredients are incorporated.
- Bake – Pour batter into prepared baking dish and bake.
- Brush – Immediately after taking the cornbread out of the oven, brush the top of the cornbread with melted butter.

Sweet Jalapeno Cornbread Notes And Expert Tips
- Allow the melted butter to cool for a few minutes before combining with the other ingredients so that it doesn’t ‘cook’ the egg when incorporating the wet and dry ingredients.
- Do not overmix the batter! Stir the wet and dry ingredients until just combined. Overmixing will lead to a dense and chewy cornbread.
- Allow the cornbread batter to rest for 5 to 15 minutes before baking. This allows the dry cornmeal to get hydrated, resulting in a moister, less gritty, and more tender cornbread. It also helps the baking powder activate, leading to a better rise.
- For a golden-brown and crispy crust, preheat your cast-iron skillet in the oven before adding the batter. Add a pat butter to the skillet just before pouring in the batter, which will help create the crispy, caramelized exterior.

Variations Of Sweet Jalapeno Cornbread To Try
- Like it a little spicier? Serrano peppers are similar in flavor, but are approximately 2 times hotter than jalapenos. You can also add in some cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.

Make It Gluten-Free
With any ingredient, if you have any concerns about whether it is considered gluten-free, it is essential to check labels for “certified gluten-free” to avoid cross-contamination that can occur during farming or manufacturing.
Cornmeal is naturally gluten-free because it is made from corn, which does not contain gluten (the protein found in wheat, barley, and rye).
To ensure the recipe is entirely gluten-free, replace the wheat-based flour with a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour like Bob’s Red Mill or King Arthur.
Make It Dairy-Free
Because traditional butter is a dairy product, you must substitute it with a plant-based alternative. Using a dairy-free brand ensures your dishes remain dairy-free without sacrificing the richness that real butter provides.
While there is no store-bought dairy-free substitute for buttermilk, you can easily create your own version at home. Combine one cup of your preferred unsweetened plant milk, such as almond, soy, or cashew, with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. Stir and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes to curdle and thicken before using in recipes as a 1:1 replacement.
