How to Make French Toast With Fruit

This is our favorite French toast recipe – mostly because of how easy it is to make (and how yummy it turns out)! Just follow these simple steps.

  1. Mix Batter – Add eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and lemon zest into a large mixing bowl and whisk to combine.
  2. Prepare Pan – Heat skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt butter to cover the surface of the large skillet.
  3. Dip Bread – Quickly dip the bread slices into the egg mixture, making sure to fully cover all sides of each slice of bread -without soaking the bread.
  4. Cook – Place the eggy bread on the griddle or in the skillet. Cook the bread slices on each side for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and thoroughly cooked.
  5. Plate and Serve – Place the French toast on a plate and top with blueberries and sliced strawberries. Dust the fruit-covered French toast with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple sugar.

French Toast With Fruit Notes And Expert Tips

  • Thick-sliced, slightly stale bread such as Texas toast, challah, sourdough, French bread, or brioche is ideal for French toast. Stale or day-old bread is perfect because it has a dry, airy texture that absorbs more of the egg mixture without falling apart.
  • Adjust the heat according to your liking and to avoid burning the French toast.
  • Avoid topping the French toast before refrigerating to prevent it from getting mushy.

Variations Of French Toast With Fruit To Try

  • Experiment with toppings that may become your new favorites on French toast, such as blackberries, fruit compote, bananas, coconut, almond butter, or peanut butter. 😋
  • Throw out the cooking rule book and use some other types of bread you may have on hand, such as cinnamon rolls, waffles, or croissants.
  • Add a little crunch with some slivered almonds or chopped pecans and walnuts.

Make It Gluten-Free

The one ingredient that needs to be replaced to make this recipe gluten-free is the bread. I have found gluten-free brands of brioche, French bread, and Texas toast in my local supermarket. You can also choose to make your own gluten-free bread, as well.

Make It Dairy-Free

Swap out the milk for almond milk and vegan, plant butter in place of the regular butter to make this recipe dairy-free.

While eggs are often located in the dairy section of the grocery store, they are actually a poultry product and are lactose-free and dairy-protein-free.

French Toast With Fruit Storage

Allow the French toast to cool to room temperature. Store in an airtight container or sealable plastic bag in the refrigerator for 2 – 3 days. To reheat, pop it in the microwave or toaster.

Place the French toast in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw in a toaster or microwave for about 30 seconds.

French Toast With Fruit FAQs

Can I use regular sandwich bread for this recipe?

Yes, you can! The key to using regular bread is to make sure it is a day or two old or is slightly dried out, which will prevent it from being too mushy and falling apart.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

You can, but I prefer to serve and eat my French toast as soon as it is cooked. You can reheat any made ahead of time in the microwave or in a toaster.

How long should I soak the bread?

My preference is to follow the recipe and dip the bread into the egg mixture to completely coat and remove. You can soak the bread for roughly 20-30 seconds per side, allowing it to become moist but not completely mushy, depending on the thickness of the bread.

How do I get my French toast to be crispy?

It is important to cook it on a preheated skillet or griddle with melted butter. For extra crispiness, you can pop it in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes.
