Supplies Needed For Rainbow Fork Painting Craft

This activity uses very simple craft materials that you probably already have. Here’s what you’ll need:

How to Make Rainbow Fork Painting

Step 1 – Add Different Colors of Paint To A Paper Plate Or Bowl

Add some paint of each color to a paper plate or put one color of paint into a bowl and repeat for each paint color.

Step 2 – Add Paint to Fork And Start Painting

Dip the back of the fork into the purple paint. Carefully place the fork on the paper at the bottom center to create a half circle.

Step 3 – Repeat the Process For Each Color

Repeat the process, using blue paint as the next layer just above the purple paint. Use this order to continue the process: green paint, yellow paint, orange paint, and red paint.

Step 4 – Finish the Painting By Adding Cotton Balls to Decorate

Glue cotton balls at the top of the paper to create clouds as a fun final touch, if you want to.

Rainbow Fork Painting Notes And Expert Tips

  • A disposable fork is the best option for this project. It makes clean-up much easier – toss them in the trash can. However, you can use any fork that you prefer, such as forks with different-sized tines or a baby fork.
  • An old shirt or smock for little ones to wear will help save their clothing from an unnecessary mess.
  • Take your supplies outside in the sunshine if it is a beautiful day. Soak up a little Vitamin D.
  • Give every paint color its own space on separate paper plates along with a fork(s) designated for that color if you want to prevent color blending.
  • Have some paper towels or wet wipes available to clean up minor messes if they occur.

How To Display Your Rainbow Fork Painting

One of my favorite things is the Kids Art Display Frames, where your little people’s artwork can be displayed in a beautiful frame, and when I am ready to add another piece, I just place it right on top of the last piece. Display and storage all in one convenient place….genius!!!

Laminate the Rainbow Fork Painting and use it as a placemat on your family dinner table.

Variations Of The Rainbow Fork Painting To Try

  • Sprinkle on a little glitter before the paint dries to add a little pizzazz
  • Use a painting canvas to fork paint your creation. Your artwork is already ‘framed’, so allow it to dry and hang.
  • Use colored cotton balls, such as blue, pink, and/or yellow, to create the clouds.

Rainbow Fork Painting FAQs

What is fork painting?

Painting with a fork is a creative technique that uses a common kitchen utensil instead of a paintbrush to create unique textures and patterns. It is a popular activity for children because it is simple, inexpensive, and helps develop fine motor skills.

What is the best type of paint to use?

Acrylic paint is a good choice, especially if your kids are older. Acrylics are thicker and a little easier to work with.

If you are crafting with younger kids, consider using washable paints, such as Tempera, to make cleanup easier.
