Ingredients Needed
- Chicken Breasts or Tenders – cook whole and slice or dice before adding to orzo
- Olive Oil – for sauteing the chicken
- Black Pepper – offers a bold, sharp, fruity, and spicy flavor with a woody aroma
- White Pepper – milder, earthier, more pungent with musty or fermented flavors
- Salt – for seasoning the dish and chicken
- Smoked Paprika – adds a distinctive, smoky flavor
- Garlic Powder – a savory, less pungent flavor than fresh garlic
- Orzo – rice-shaped pasta that resembles rice, and when cooked, has a tender, pasta-like texture
- Onion – yellow onions are versatile and great when cooking, as they develop sweetness when cooked
- Garlic Cloves – balances the bright acidity of the lemon juice
- White Cooking Wine – adds acidity, depth, and brightness (I eliminate this and use extra chicken stock for my family)
- Chicken Broth – the orzo will absorb savory flavor, resulting in a richer taste than boiling it in plain water
- Heavy Cream – helps create the risotto-like texture
- Lemon Juice – using some fresh lemon juice along with bottled juice will add a more intense flavor
- Parmesan Cheese – freshly grated adds maximum flavor and freshness
- Parsley – fresh, as a garnish

- Simmer – Mix thoroughly and allow to simmer until the orzo is tender, which will take about 5 – 7 minutes.

Lemon Orzo Chicken Notes And Expert Tips
- Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces to make the meal go further for your family.
- It might seem that you have too much liquid at the beginning of the cooking process. The orzo will absorb more liquid than you think, so don’t worry. If it requires more liquid, add more as needed while cooking.
- If the chicken breasts are on the large side, pound them with a rolling pin or meat mallet. In addition to making them thinner, it will also make them more tender.
- A non-stick pan is going to be the best option when preparing this dish 🙂
- If you want an even more intense lemon flavor, you can add a teaspoon of lemon zest to the dish!

Variations Of Lemon Orzo Chicken To Try
- Toss in some fresh spinach, peas, asparagus, grape tomatoes, sliced red peppers, or broccoli florets for added nutrition, color, and flavor.
- Add in a dash of red pepper flakes or a splash of hot sauce if you love a little extra kick.
- Replace the chicken with shrimp or scallops for a delicious seafood dish.
- Make this dish even quicker on busy weeknights by using rotisserie chicken!
- Add some fresh basil, fresh parsley, or Italian seasoning to this delicious meal.
Make It Gluten-Free
Most cooking wine is gluten-free, but you will need to make sure you find a gluten-free variety.
Also, you will need to substitute the regular orzo for a gluten-free brand.
Make It Dairy-Free
Exchange the cream, parmesan, and cream cheese for dairy-free alternatives and enjoy!

Lemon Chicken Orzo Storage
Place leftovers in an airtight container and place it in the fridge for up to 2 – 4 days. Keep in mind that the longer it is stored, the orzo will soak up the juices and sauce.
To reheat, place leftovers in a saucepan over medium heat until warmed through. Add a splash of broth or cream, if desired or necessary, to add moisture.
Lemon Orzo Chicken FAQs
There are some options for substitutes if you do not want to use chicken. Turkey is a good choice as it is a similar, lean poultry option.
There are a couple of plant-based, vegan options that you could try, such as Beyond Meat, Quorn, or tofu. These are options that I have not tried before in this recipe, so use (or experiment with) what you feel comfortable!
Heavy cream is the best choice for this Lemon Chicken Orzo recipe. Using half-and-half will not produce the creaminess and consistency that heavy cream does.
Absolutely! Keep in mind that if you use rice, you will likely have to adjust the cooking time and amount of wine, broth, and cream you use. I have not tried this recipe with rice, so I can not speak to the changes that need to be made.
You can freeze this dish for up to 2 – 3 months. However, keep in mind that the texture of the orzo may become very soft or mushy upon thawing and reheating.
