How to Make Simple Pad Thai
- Noodle Prep – Dry noodles will need to be soaked in warm water for about 20 minutes until they become flexible. Once the noodles are flexible, drain off the water. Ready-to-eat or fresh noodles simply need to be rinsed.
- Cook Tofu – Heat a skillet or wok with vegetable oil over medium heat. Cook tofu until browned. Set to the side.
- Eggs – Beat eggs and cook the scrambled eggs in the same skillet or wok. Add more oil if needed. Once cooked, push them to the side of the pan.
- Garlic – Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté it quickly until fragrant.
- Sauce – In the skillet or wok, add sugar and tamarind sauce. Toss to coat.
- Combine – Pour noodles into the pan and cook with the sauce and eggs for about 2 – 3 minutes until heated through and has a glossy appearance.
- Veggies – Add in the bean sprouts and half of the chopped green onions. Toss gently.
- Add Tofu – Combine the browned tofu into the mixture. Allow it to warm through.
- Serve – Plate your Pad Thai and top with the other half of the green onions, lime wedges, and chili flakes, if desired.

Simple Pad Thai Notes And Expert Tips
- Rice noodles are traditionally used in Pad Thai recipes, but you can use pasta noodles or even ramen noodles if you prefer. Spaghetti or linguine are good options for this recipe.
- If you choose to use ready-to-eat noodles, remember that they cook very quickly, so watch them closely to avoid the noodles becoming mushy.
- Add a tiny splash of water or stock to the noodles if you find them sticking together. Toss to separate.

Variations Of Simple Pad Thai To Try
- Prefer to go vegan? Leave out the egg. Add in a variety of veggies instead.
- Swap Out The Protein – If tofu is not your preference, switch up the protein to chicken and/or shrimp.
- Add More Color – Sliced red and green peppers will add a pop of color and a delicious flavor to this dish.
- Try Adding Nuts – Drop in some peanuts for a delicious crunch and added texture.
Make It Gluten-Free
Rice noodles are generally gluten-free as they are made from just rice flour and water. However, you should still check the package labels, as some brands may add wheat flour or other ingredients that contain gluten.
Make It Dairy-Free
Plain tofu is completely dairy-free. It is made from condensed soy milk that is pressed into solid blocks, meaning it contains no animal milk, lactose, or dairy proteins
Make It Nut-Free
Tamarind sauce is a blend of pulpy tamarind fruit, water, sugar, and spices. Despite its source, standard tamarind sauce does not contain peanuts or tree nuts.

Simple Pad Thai Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 to 4 days. Keep in mind that the bean sprouts and proteins may lose their texture after the first day or two in the fridge.
Simple Pad Thai FAQs
Rice noodles are the traditional and best choice for Pad Thai because they absorb sweet and savory sauces without getting mushy.
I highly recommend NOT freezing cooked Pad Thai because the rice noodles will turn mushy and lose their texture when thawed.
Not really. This dish is best served immediately after cooking.
You can do some prep work ahead of time to speed things up, such as mixing the sauce, chopping the green onions, slicing the limes, and preparing your protein so it is ready to go into the pan.
