My kids LOVE potato chips. Do your kids love them too? Do YOU love potato chips?
We definitely very much enjoy potato chips, but I try to find a balance between the less healthy potato chips and a healthy version for my kids and family.
We tried some store-bought apple chips and liked them. So I thought I would try making them myself…and it’s the perfect excuse to use my air fryer (my current favorite kitchen appliance – I prefer the rack style because it holds more)!
Air fryers have become increasingly popular in recent years and they can be used to make many delicious dishes, including apple chips! These snacks are a great alternative to snacks that are not quite as healthy for us and can be enjoyed without guilt.
And they’re PERFECT for taking on the go (like to the sports field!)!
I have been a fan of apple chips for a LONG time. They are SO yummy and a perfect snack or salad topping!
Air fryer apple chips are a delicious, healthy, and portable snack that can be enjoyed on a long road trip, sports activities, or a weekend of camping.
These apple chips are sure to please everyone in your family – from young kids to health-conscious adults alike.

How To Make Air Fryer Apple Chips
Here’s how to make this to-go snack:
Step 1
Begin by slicing the apples into thin slices using a mandoline or knife. Lay the apple slices on a sheet of parchment paper.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix together thoroughly the cinnamon and sugar.
Step 3
Spray apple slices with oil, and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Turn the apple slice over and repeat.
Step 4
Place the slices in the air fryer basket. If you stack the slices, make sure there is plenty of room between slices.
Step 5
Cook the apple slices for 20 minutes at 300 degrees. Shake the air fryer basket approximately every 5 minutes.
Step 6
When the apple chips look dry, increase the air fryer temperature to 325 and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
Step 7
Remove the chips from the air fryer basket and allow them to sit for 5 – 10 minutes.
Air Fried Apple Chips Recipe Notes And Tips
- It is best not to overload the basket with apple slices. You want the air to circulate around the chips so that they all come out crispy and as dry as possible.
- Your air fryer may vary a bit on temperature like all appliances seem to do. The first time or two you make these you may have to experiment with the cooking time.
- Using a mandoline slicer will help the slices be more uniform in size when allows them to cook more evenly.
Variations Of Air Fryer Apple Chips To Try
- Prefer a little spicy with a little sweet? Add a dash of cayenne pepper or ancho chili pepper.
- Swap out the sugar for a natural sweetener by using a little vanilla extract, honey, or maple syrup. YUM!
- Pineapple, pears, peaches, and strawberries are equally as scrumptious and easy to make in the air fryer as chip versions.
- Shake up the flavor profile a bit by using different spices such as adding apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, or cardamon to your air fryer apple chips.
- No air fryer? No problem! You can make these in the oven – just check my oven instructions down below.
Homemade Apple Chips In the Oven
If you currently don’t have an air fryer (it’s TOTALLY worth it), you CAN make these in the oven! Here’s how!
- Preheat oven to 200°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
- Slice apples and season as written in the instructions above.
- Spread apple slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 1 hour, then flip apple slices over and bake another 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Remove one apple chip and let it sit on the counter for a few minutes. Take a bite and see how crisp it is. If it’s not, continue baking a little longer.
- If it’s crispy, turn off the oven and leave the apple chips in there for another hour to crisp up as they gradually cool.
FAQs
My favorite types of apples are the Fuji or Red Delicious. Those are my go-to’s for this recipe but any type will work.
That’s a great question! It doesn’t matter in terms of making apple chips and really becomes a personal preference.
I prefer them with the peel on, you may not. Try them both ways and see which you like the best.
It’s important to note that they’ll continue crisping a little after you take them out of the air fryer.
I recommend taking them out of the air fryer when they look golden brown (even if they’re still soft). They’ll crisp right up as they cool and turn out perfectly!
These apple chips are best and freshest when served immediately. They do not stay crisp when stored and over time can go from crispy to a little soft/chewy.
However, you can make up a batch or more of the sugar and cinnamon mixture ahead of time and store it in an air-tight container.
Any leftovers should be stored in an air-tight container and stored at room temperature. They will keep for 2 – 3 days. The chips will lose their crispiness over time but they are still quite yummy.
I personally have not tried this because when I make a batch, they just do not last long in my house. Also, since they’re dried, they last a lot longer than fresh apple slices.
However, once the chips are air fried and allowed to cool completely, I THINK you can place them in a freezer-safe container or storage bag and place them in the freezer for up to 2 – 3 months.
The majority of the moisture has been cooked out so they should not get soggy by placing them in the freezer. I bet they are deliciously crispy if you eat them right out of the freezer.
If they do feel a little soft after freezing them, simply put them back in the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp up.
