What is hot honey made of, and is it super spicy?
Hot honey is a combination of ingredients consisting of chili peppers or jalapenos for the heat and vinegar for tang and to balance the sweetness. It can also contain garlic or smoked paprika.
Typically, hot honey is not extremely spicy. It is a mild-to-moderate sweet heat that complements the flavor of the food but doesn’t overpower it. Of course, the heat level will vary by brand depending on the type of chili that is used.

Hot Honey Chicken Notes And Expert Tips
- If you do not have any hot honey or you prefer to make your own, you can infuse regular honey with hot sauce of your choosing and some diced jalapeno.
- You can add the flour and hot BBQ seasoning to a storage bag, add the chicken filets, and shake instead of using a shallow dish. Either method will work; it just depends on what works best for you.
- Leave the sauce off a few pieces if you have family members who don’t do spicy!
- TIP: All ovens and stovetops cook differently, so consider reducing the heat under the skillet to medium-low so the chicken does not overcook before you finish cooking it in the oven.

Variations Of Hot Honey Chicken To Try
- Like it spicy? Sprinkle on some red pepper flakes before serving.
- Cut the chicken into nugget-sized pieces instead of filets. Serve over rice and add a few steamed veggies like broccoli and carrots to create a chicken bowl.
- Garnish with some sliced green onions and a little bit of shaved parmesan.
- Make it a slider and add one of the chicken filets to a small Hawaiian roll and top with some lettuce. Add a slice of pepper jack cheese too! YUM!
- Slice or chop the Hot Honey Chicken, and it makes a great protein topper for a salad.
Make It Gluten-Free
The all-purpose flour must be replaced with a measure-to-measure or 1:1 ratio gluten-free flour. Several brands are great options, such as Krusteaz, Bob’s Red Mill, or your preferred gluten-free store brand.
Also, most hot BBQ seasonings and hot honey brands are naturally gluten-free, but you should always check the label as different brands and processed versions can have added ingredients or cross-contamination from other products or the facility they are produced in.

Hot Honey Chicken Storage
Hot Honey Chicken is best served right out of the oven, but if you do have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2 – 3 days.
This chicken recipe freezes nicely for up to 3 months, but it is best to flash-freeze pieces on a baking sheet first to prevent sticking, then store in an airtight container or freezer bag for reheating in an oven or air fryer.
Hot Honey Chicken FAQs
YES! Chicken thighs contain a little more fat in them, so they tend to be more juicy. The skinless thighs can be a little more budget-friendly as well.
There are certain steps you can take ahead of the cooking process to save yourself some extra time. You can mix the flour and hot BBQ seasoning and store it in a bag until you are ready to use it. Also, you can trim and cut your chicken and place it in the fridge for 1 – 2 days before cooking.
Also, if you are making your own hot honey, you can prepare that ahead of time and store in an airtight container.
That is a great question! Grapeseed, avocado, and sunflower oil are all great substitutes as they are all great for medium to high heat cooking due to their neutral flavors and high smoke points.
